Abstract: The painful process of Ireland's re-emergence as a nation exacerbated Irish nationalism and chauvinism, which often elicited attacks against the Jews. Irish-Jewish relations went through traumatic events, such as the riot in Limerick in 1904 which put an end to the Jewish community in the city. In the 1930s-40s the government, eager to preserve Ireland's neutrality in the European conflict, virtually barred entry to Jewish refugees. Since World War II Ireland has reviewed its attitude toward minorities and Irish-Jewish relations have improved. But the Jewish community is shrinking; in 1991, there were 1,581 Jews in the Republic.
