Abstract:
Surveys reports written by French diplomats in Poland concerning the Jewish minority and their treatment by the Polish state. Hector de Panafieu, J. Laroche and Léon Noël were consecutive French ambassadors in Poland. Most of the reports show a negative attitude on the part of the diplomats toward the Jewish minority and their role in Poland. Jewish politics was judged as particularistic, balancing between left and right for their own profit. The Jews in general were perceived by ambassadors as unfriendly to Poland. Discusses, among others, the descriptions of antisemitic incidents in Poland, the attempts to introduce a numerus clausus at the universities, and the growth of antisemitism after Piłsudski's death, including its causes. States that only Léon Noël, who served in Poland between 1935-39, observed the real problems of the Jews. Concludes that the opinions of the ambassadors were evidently influenced by their own stereotypical perception of the Jews and by the opinions of Endecja politicians who were among their friends.
