Abstract:
Examines the development, in France of the 1890s, of the concepts of a Dreyfusard intellectual identity vs. the anti-Dreyfusard rabble-rousing masses, and the use of metaphors of the body (either the Jewish body or the French body) by Dreyfusards and anti-Dreyfusards against each other - to depict seduction, degeneracy, and weakness, which were usually stereotypes used against women and Jews. These descriptions were meant either to denigrate the Jews or to encourage Frenchmen to exercise and strengthen their bodies - to project masculinity.
