Abstract:
Philipp Melanchthon was influenced in his tolerance of Judaism by his great-uncle Johannes Reuchlin. In the Reuchlin-Pfefferkorn controversy he wrote a tract in Reuchlin's defense. In 1539 he intervened for the Jews of Brandenburg, who had been expelled in 1510 because of a supposed host desecration, showing that such accusations were false. His attitude stands in contrast to the anti-Jewish invectives of Luther.
