Abstract:
Asserts that Nazi Germany, in depriving the Jews of their rights, committed treason against its citizens. The state had traditionally been the protector of the Jews, who were among its most loyal citizens, and when it turned persecutor they were unable to grasp it or to defend themselves. Traces the successive laws depriving Jews of the means of existence, and accuses the German population, with few exceptions, of passivity in face of the persecution of their fellow citizens and in many cases of enthusiastic participation. Suggests that the explanation may lie in the fact that German society never accepted the Jews as true Germans. This attitude is changing in today's Germany.
