Abstract: Opposes the view that Voltaire was an antisemite. In regard to Voltaire's negative opinions on the Jews, asserts that the text usually quoted is his item "Les Juifs" written for the "Dictionnaire philosophique". But Voltaire did not write this article himself; it was compiled by someone else after his death, and that person used various propositions on the Jews found in Voltaire's writings but taken out of context. Asserts that Voltaire was also quoted in a distorted way by Henri Lebroue, who edited an anthology of Voltaire's writings in France during the Vichy period. Argues that Voltaire was not an antisemite, and that his critical opinions, scattered in various writings, refer only to ancient Jews and their beliefs, prejudices, and fanaticism; they never refer to contemporary Jews. Voltaire, a non-believer, could not understand Jews who believed themselves to be the Chosen People.
