Abstract: A research carried out by the Sozialwissenschaftliche Studiengesellschaft (Wien) in 1988. The study intended to examine to what extent Nazi ideology is still extant in Austrian public opinion. The concepts of racism and antisemitism ought to be at the center of such an analysis. Nevertheless, the initial goals of the study could not be realized because of ambivalent terminology used in the questions concerning Nazi propaganda, changing the sense of certain items, so that a clear measurement of views was not possible. States that the study provides partial results which can present a starting point for further analyses. The questionnaire, which was presented to two samples - in January 1988 to 1,972 persons, and in March to 1,892 - shows that 3% of the population, mainly non-professional and self-employed workers, share radical-political views. 37% of the respondents, mainly academics and civil servants, have clear democratic views. Shows also that 39% have prejudices against other nations, while 45% are unprejudiced.
