Abstract: Contends that the Holocaust was neither the necessary nor sufficient factor that influenced the United Nations resolution on the partition of Palestine in 1947. Among other factors that contributed to the establishment of the Jewish state, points to the successful activities of the Zionist movement in the world; the great success of the Palestinian Yishuv in creating the country's economic and social structures in the interwar years; postwar antisemitism in Central and Eastern Europe, which prevented the repatriation of the displaced persons; the process of decolonialization; and the popular support given by world public opinion to the Zionist cause both before and after the war.
