Abstract: Presents a summary of two public opinion polls conducted by the University of Iowa in 1991 and 1992 in Russia and in the Ukraine. Among the subjects studied were the perception of dissimilarity (social distance) between the respondent and the Jews as a group, and the correlation between political and ideological orientation and sentiments toward Jews. The surveys show that the sense of social distance is rather great in both the republics. However, there is not always a positive correlation between conservative, illiberal, anti-reformist attitudes and hostility toward Jews; this interdependence is different in Russia and in the Ukraine.
