Abstract:
Focuses on two questions: what was the motivation for the mass murder of the Jews and other so-called "valueless" groups in Nazi-occupied Europe, and whether the euthanasia policy preceded the genocidal policy regarding the Jews or vice versa. Presents views of historians and other specialists on the subject. Agrees with Robert Lifton (in his book "Nazi Doctors") that neither policy preceded the other, but both were caused by the development of a "genocide mentality". Forced sterilization was the transitional stage between persecution and mass murder.
