Abstract: An overview of recent research (1960s-80s) on the Jews of Italy from the 19th century to the fascist era. In Italy, antisemitism was not an effective political instrument and racism was not widespread or deeply rooted. M. Michaelis, in "Mussolini e la questione ebraica" (1982), notes continuity between liberal attitudes to the Jews and those of Italian nationalists and fascists, interrupted by the introduction of German-inspired racism. Argues that Michaelis ignores internal political factors, such as native Italian racism which served as an instrument of national unity and colonial pretensions. F. Del Canuto's "Come si giunse alla missione in Etiopia prese i falascia" (1981) describes the Italian attempt to annihilate the Jewish identity of the Ethiopian Jews. also mentions works on the fascist and Holocaust periods in Italy by M. Leone, S. Sorani, A. Cavaglion, and p. Sereni.
