Abstract:
Contends that the Maharal of Prague, Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel (c. 1525-1609), wrote the "Be'er ha-Golah", a treatise on the correct interpretation of apparently absurd "aggadot" in the Talmud, as a defense of the Talmud against its Christian detractors. 16th-century Christian polemic against Judaism (led by apostates) centered on homiletic sections of the Talmud, reflecting Jewish interest in midrashic treatises and Christian interest in this literature in order to influence the Jews to convert. The fact that Prague, having the largest Jewish community in the Holy Roman Empire, was a center of Church activities against the Talmud explains the implicitly polemical character of the book. Censorship prevented the expression of explicit anti-Christian arguments.
