Abstract:
Analyzes the status of the different minorities in the Venetian-controlled Messenia (Peloponessus). Although they were accepted by the Venetian rulers, the Jews were viewed as aliens, with no citizenship rights, and lived in separate quarters in the cities of Coron and Modon. They were subject to special taxes and prohibited from working on Catholic holy days, unlike the Orthodox and Muslim minorities.
Note:
Deals mainly with the Jewish minority.
