Abstract:
Surveys the antisemitic developments in Spain from the 14th century - e.g. pogroms in Estella in 1328 and 1355 instigated by Franciscans; orders by the bishops of Aragon to convert Jews by preaching, to execute Conversos, and to have Jews wear a yellow badge. At the end of the 14th century, Ferrant Martínez of Sevilla gained mass support for the forced conversion of Jews and initiated the destruction of more than 70 Jewish communities. In 1412-14 Vincent Ferrer launched a violent campaign of conversion. Records the institution of "limpieza de sangre" to ban Conversos from public life from 1449 onwards, and the establishment of the Spanish Inquisition in 1478. Prior to the expulsion of 1492, Ferdinand and Isabella banned Jews from Andalusia, Sevilla, Cordoba, Cadiz, and Zaragoza in 1482, 1483, and 1486.
