Abstract: Analyzes Italian statesman Carlo Cattaneo's work "Le Interdizioni Israelitiche" which was published in twelve editions between 1837-1988. Initiated by the conflict over the prohibition on Jews to acquire land in the Swiss canton of Basel, his book argued against alienating legislation and for the rights and emancipation of the Jews. States that although Cattaneo's image of the Jew was influenced by all the prejudices and stereotypes of his time, he strongly advocated equal rights for Jews, not only for the sake of tolerance and social justice, but also as a means to recycle into the economy the financial resources mustered by the Jews.
