Abstract:
Analyzes differences in two historiographical works on the forced conversion of Jews in Clermont in spring 576: the report of Gregory of Tours (580) and the poem by Venantius Fortunatus (576). As the poet received his information from Gregory of Tours, it seems astonishing that their descriptions vary. While the poem describes a pogrom and physical attacks on Jews which forced 500 of them to convert, these events are omitted in Gregory's account. It seems that this discrepancy was due to political reasons, as Gregory was aware that Pope Gregory I condemned the use of force for conversion and recommended only persuasion by sermons. However, these restrictions against force did not exclude permission for discrimination and moral pressure.
