Abstract: Chronicles the exclusion of Jews from the German Turnerschaft and other sports organizations immediately after the Nazi takeover. In many cases this took place on the organization's own initiative. Front-line veterans and "Mischlinge" were also barred, even though these were at the time exempt from other Nazi racist decrees. Many towns closed the swimming pools and other sports facilities to Jews. The regime tolerated separate Jewish sports organizations in order to prevent international boycott of the Olympic games. Two token half-Jews participated on the Olympic team, but a Jewish high jumper was not allowed to compete, although she had passed the preliminary contests. Describes the continuing activities of the Jewish sports clubs despite declining membership due to emigration. After the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, all the groups were forcibly disbanded. Traces the fate of three former Olympic champions who perished in concentration camps.
