Abstract: An overview of various ways in which over 3,000 Jewish children were rescued in Belgium during the Nazi occupation. Focuses on the activities of the underground organization Comité de Défense des Juifs en Belgique, established around September 1942, which by the end of the war had hidden 2,104 children in private homes and in institutions such as monasteries, nurseries, and convalescent homes. Discusses, also, the seven orphanages under the jurisdiction of the Association des Juifs de Belgique, the Judenrat established in November 1941. In order to uphold the illusion of deportation for labor in the East, the Nazis permitted the continued existence of orphanages and old age homes. The inmates of these institutions (ca. 500 children and 600 elderly) survived the war. Refers to problems which arose after the war regarding the refusal of some Christians and Church institutions to return Jewish children to the Jewish community, and also the refusal of some 100 children to return (they have remained Christians up to the present day).
