Abstract: Some leftists suggest that much of the anti-Jewish sentiment in Black communities is justifiable. A number of theories, including Edna Bonacich's sojourner theory, have provided a basis for this viewpoint. Her theory suggests that workers other than Jews (i.e. Blacks) develop antagonistic relationships with Jews as a result of Jewish economic activities. Uses economic data to show why the sojourner and gap theories of Bonacich are contradicted by the actual behavior of prewar Jewish immigrants in the USA. These theories reflect and reinforce stereotypes, and undercut efforts to form alliances between Blacks and Jews.
