Abstract:
Emphasizes the importance of theological anti-Judaism in the history of antisemitism. Traces the development of Jewish-Christian relations, especially in the USA, since 1945 - the period of joint action in fields of common interest (1950s-60s); the period of theological encounter, focusing on the "Nostra aetate" declaration in 1965; and the present period, a period of engagement. States that relations with the Vatican, currently problematic, are no longer of central importance for Catholic-Jewish relations in the USA. Calls for closer relations on a local level and broadening of the Jewish part in the dialogue to include Holocaust survivors and Orthodox and Zionist representatives rather than theologians alone. Dialogue must be based on full recognition of the authenticity of Jewish traditions, of Christian responsibility for antisemitism, of the unique Jewish experience in the Holocaust, the legitimacy of the State of Israel, and current Jewish concerns.
