Abstract: Argues that the theoretical underpinnings of the new and hostile Christian perception of Jews, attributed by many historians to the period of the Crusades, were already in place well before 1096. Analyzes 34 canonical collections of the 11th-12th centuries, most of them unpublished (see list and references to Jews on pp. 15-18), some of whose texts on the Jews were widely disseminated. Discusses particularly the decretals of Burchard of Worms (ca. 1012) and Ivo of Chartres (ca. 1094). The texts' primary concern is religious: to keep members of the two religions apart and to preserve the secondary status of Jews. Concludes that the Jewish crisis of the Crusade period originated in the religious exclusivity that developed in the West during the 11th century.
