Abstract:
Details Eleanor Roosevelt's actions on behalf of world Jewry and Israel from "Kristallnacht" until her death in 1962. Discusses the opposition within the U.S. Administration and the antisemitism she encountered while advocating the Jewish refugee cause during the war years. Describes her shift from an assimilationist solution to the "Jewish question" to support of mass resettlement outside of Palestine, and to eventual support for Zionism and Israel. Suggests that her dedication to Youth Aliyah in the postwar years may have stemmed from guilt regarding American official silence during the war.
