Abstract: Describes two engravings representing the pogrom which took place in Durmenach in the Haut Rhin department of Alsace, during the revolution of February 1848. The drawings depict a scene of vandalism and drunkenness in which a Torah scroll taken from the destroyed synagogue is mocked. The engravings provide accurate historical documentation of the atmosphere in Duermenach where the 600 Jewish inhabitants formed a majority. Antisemitic feelings and incidents were repeatedly reported by the gendarmerie, the prefect, and other local officials - e.g. in 1808, 1819, and 1832. During the 1848 revolution the lack of state authority provided an opportunity for pogroms throughout the Haut Rhin. Many Jews fled to Switzerland. In the repression which followed, ten persons were tried and received severe sentences for their part in the pogrom.
