Abstract:
Deals with the pogrom of 1834 in the town of Neuss and surroundings in the lower Rhineland, sparked off by a ritual murder accusation. Jews were attacked and their property destroyed. Gives a detailed account of these events based on reports by eyewitnesses and municipal officials. Religious differences and economic jealousy on the part of Christians caused constant antisemitism in the region. Also describes the position of the Jews in Neuss during the emancipation under French occupation, between 1798-1814. Although the Rhineland became part of Prussia in 1814, legal emancipation remained in force until 1822, when the Jews lost many rights and were barred from various professions.
