Abstract:
Examines the attitudes of the German occupiers towards the Eastern European conquered population, particularly Jews, and the extent to which the assumptions of both sides on questions of hygiene and disease were affected by cultural prejudice. Mentions the stereotype of Eastern European Jews as alien, dirty, and culturally inferior, which was shared by many Germans (including German Jews). However, German attempts to introduce "hygienic" methods were often perceived by local Jews as attempts at control and assaults on their own cultural values.
