Abstract:
In 1940, Antonescu's regime banned all Jewish intellectual activity and excluded Jews from artistic, academic, and professional life. Intellectual and professional organizations expelled their Jewish members and accepted large sums of money extorted from the Jewish community. Nevertheless, some individuals helped Jews to keep working, especially in the theater. In the postwar period, the intellectuals' behavior was severely criticized. It may be attributed to the influence of the nationalist ideology propagated by admired cultural figures, especially Nicolae Iorga. Concludes with an examination of the reactions of three Romanian Jewish writers to their exclusion from intellectual life and abandonment by some non-Jewish friends.
