Abstract:
Responsa, novellae and first person historical account from R. Moses Tuvia ben Jehiel Michael Sontheim (1753-1831), av bet din Hanau, and a student of R. Joseph Steinhardt (1720–1776). The title page states that the responsa deal with practical halakhah, commentary, and explanation on the Torah, and other holy writings, as well as novellae on the Talmud. The book is printed from a manuscript of the author by his grandson who is named after him, R. Moses Tuvia ben Nathan Aryeh. Or Penei Moshe begins with a biography of R. Sondheim, followed by the responsa. There are twenty-four responsa, covering such topics as partnership with a gentile on Shabbat, mikva’ot, if a sage sees a stain by a woman, seeing blood, on a a questionable status of Agunah and whether it can be determined if a person drowned by signs, if the grave of a deceased person may be opened, on berit milah on two children and the blessing, halakhot pertaining to a sefer Torah and to a Megillah, sefirot ha-Omer, and Shatnez. The responsa are followed by Megillot Hanau, which describes the siege of the city by the armies of Napoleon in 1813 and the wondrous events that occurred at that time.
