Abstract: In 1985, the Yeshiva University Museum, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, produced, "Ashkenaz: The German Jewish Heritage", covering 1,000 years of Jewish Life under the German rule from the time of Charlemagne until the Hitler era. Since the exhibition's scope, vast though it was, did not extend beyond 1940, it was apparent to us that a way had to be found to tell the story of the survivors of Ashkenaz: how and why the German Jews came to the Heights and succeeded by transplanting themselves, their institutions, and their thousand year old culture to a new world.
