Kurzfassung:
Traces the fate of the Jewish community of Sokołów Podlaski, where there were ca. 4,000 Jews in the interwar period. The Nazis occupied the town in September 1939, and during the next few months they appointed a Judenrat and demanded various contributions from the Jews. The ghetto was established in fall 1940, and its gates were closed in August 1941. When it was liquidated in September 1942 its inhabitants were deported to Treblinka or to the Szczeglacin labor camp. Some Jews escaped and survived with the help of Poles. This essay is based partly on the testimony of Josef Kopyto, found in the ŻIH archives.
