Abstract:
Clauss, a student of the psychology of races, became fascinated already in the 1930s by the Bedouin, the unspoiled desert warriors, among whom he lived for long periods. He contrasted them with the city dwellers of the Near East - urban Arabs, Turks, and most especially Jews. To these he applied all the popularantisemitic as well as the Christian anti-Jewish stereotypes. He was valued by the SD and did research for the SS Ahnenerbe. At the same time, he hid and saved his "non-Aryan" assistant, Margarete Landé; for this he was honored by Yad Vashem in 1976 as one of the Righteous among the Nations.
