Abstract:
Traces Hungarian-language historiography from 1945 to the present, arguing that the Holocaust has been severed from the national memory. The House of Terror in Budapest reflects this. Established in 2002, it officially commemorates both the Nazi and communist periods of terror. However, of the 30 exhibition rooms, only three are dedicated to the years 1944-45, when 435,000 Hungarian Jews were deported. All blame for the Holocaust is laid on the Arrow Cross Party, portrayed as Germany's henchmen. The Holocaust Memorial Center, on the other hand, established in 2004 and situated in a synagogue in peripheral Budapest, documents the persecution of the Hungarian Jews, but mainly draws foreign visitors. Concludes that the two memorials do not compete, since the House of Terror has established its supremacy.
