Kurzfassung:
Examines the exploitation of Jewish labor resources in Western Belarus (divided in the occupation period between the General Commissariate White Ruthenia, Reich Commissariate Ukraine and General District Białystok) by the Nazi occupation authorities (the Wehrmacht). Only a small part of the prewar Jewish artisans (who survived the first massacres in summer 1941) continued to work as artisans; the majority were employed as factory workers. The Jewish workers were denied all the meager advantages that were allotted to "Aryan" workers; 20% of their wages were deducted. There were other deductions from the wages of Jews. Examination of the wartime economic records in the archives of Brest, Pinsk, and Grodno shows that the Jews in these cities were employed for the most difficult tasks, and that large fines were often levied on them. The massacres and deportations of Jews which resumed in the fall of 1942 heavily damaged the Nazi economy in the region.
