Abstract: This book analyzes the ways in which literary works and cultural discourses employ the construct of the Jew’s body in relation to the material world in order either to establish and reinforce, or to subvert and challenge, dominant cultural norms and stereotypes. It examines the use of physical characteristics, embodied practices, tacit knowledge and senses to define the body taxonomically as normative, different, abject or mimetically desired. Starting from the works of Gogol and Dostoevsky through to contemporary Russian-Jewish women’s writing, the book argues that materiality also embodies fictional constructions that should be approached as a culture-specific material-semiotic interface

Abstract: Die Erforschung der Holocaustliteratur hat Hochkonjunktur.

Abstract: This ground-breaking collection features the oeuvre of Debora Vogel (1900-1942), a Modernist Polish and Yiddish writer, philosopher, translator, and art critic. The author’s poems are examples of Cubist-Constructivist experimentation in a language that is at once lyrical and philosophical.Vogel’s poetry challenges every notion of writing in Yiddish literature from the author’s lifetime to ours. The writer’s prose collection transplants experiments in photography, film, and painting, into the literary medium. Vogel’s articles deal with a variety of topics ranging from abstract art, and individual artists like Marc Chagall and Fernand Leger, to matters of applied arts, including discussions of the interiors of modern apartments, the typography of children’s books, and an overview of fashion exhibitions. In addition, Vogel’s essays examine racism and anti-Semitism, the tasks of progressive intellectuals’ engagement in the society, and the use of literary montage as a way literature ‘does politics.’ Vogel’s extensive travels to Berlin, Stockholm, Vienna, and Paris, and her intimate familiarity with the cityscapes of her native Lwów are reflected in her writings. Vogel’s multimodal writing could be read in conjunction with Giorgio de Chirico’s, Pablo Picasso’s, or El Lissitsky’s paintings, Max Ernst’s painterly and writerly experiments, or Fritz Lang’s, Dziga Vertov’s, and Sergei Eisenstein’s films. Lyubas situates Vogel as the key, yet unrecognized figure for thought and literature of the early and late 20th century, as well as a thinker whose insights are crucial to grasp the contemporary socio-political issues. This is the first collection of Vogel’s writings in English translation

Abstract: The definitive biography of Soviet Jewish dissident writer Vasily Grossman If Vasily Grossman’s 1961 masterpiece, Life and Fate, had been published during his lifetime, it would have reached the world together with Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago and before Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag. But Life and Fate was seized by the KGB. When it emerged posthumously, decades later, it was recognized as the War and Peace of the twentieth century. Always at the epicenter of events, Grossman (1905–1964) was among the first to describe the Holocaust and the Ukrainian famine. His 1944 article “The Hell of Treblinka” became evidence at Nuremberg. Grossman’s powerful anti†‘totalitarian works liken the Nazis’ crimes against humanity with those of Stalin. His compassionate prose has the everlasting quality of great art. Because Grossman’s major works appeared after much delay we are only now able to examine them properly. Alexandra Popoff’s authoritative biography illuminates Grossman’s life and legacy

Abstract: In the ghettos of Lithuania an urban infrastructure developed based on the needs of Jewish conscription and forced labor for German occupation forces and the Lithuanian administration. Using the example of the ghettos in Vilnius, Kaunas, and Šiauliai, the author reveals for the first time the ways to which Jewish labor conscription was organized inside and outside the ghettos and the patterns of daily ghetto life as seen by the inhabitants.

Abstract: Will the Russian and Jewish nations ever achieve true reconciliation? Why is there such disparity in the interpretations of Russo-Jewish history? These questions are part of a greater whole-Russia's perpetual Jewish Question. This historically thorny subject has been the focus of Nobel Laureate Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn for the last ten years, culminating in a publication that will be among his final literary offerings. Entitled Two Hundred Years Together, the work seeks to elucidate Judeo-Russian relations as well as promote mutual healing between the two nationalities. But the polarized reception of Solzhenitsyn's work has reflected the passionate sentiments of Jews and Russians alike. Having yet no English translation, the work has received less than its due readership. Notwithstanding, Two Hundred Years Together addresses a vital question of history. As a writer, political thinker, and religious voice, Solzhenitsyn symbolizes Russia's historically ambivalent relationship vis-à-vis the Jewish nation. He, like his countrymen, harbors both admiration for and apprehension about Judaism in post-Soviet Russia. To explore the multifaceted Russo-Jewish Question, this book examines Two Hundred Years Together within the context of anti-Semitism, nationalism, Russian literature, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's prolific, influential life

Abstract: The book presents a broad interdisciplinary perspective on the contemporary Russian immigration to three countries: the United States, Germany, and Israel. The changes and transformations in three domains, i.e., cultural perception, self-identification, and attitudes to first language maintenance, are explored through the Acculturation Framework that allows bringing together these essential aspects of immigration. A separate look at Jewish and Russian ethnic groups within the so-called "Russian" immigration as well as its interdisciplinary nature sets this book apart from other studies on rece
