    Abstract: In 1939, the Nazi regime's plans for redrawing the demographic map of Eastern Europe entailed the expulsion of millions of Jews. By the fall of 1941, these plans had shifted from expulsion to systematic and total mass murder of all Jews within the Nazi grasp. This book is the most detailed and comprehensive analysis ever written of what took place during this crucial period--of how, precisely, the Nazis' racial policies evolved from persecution and "ethnic cleansing" to the Final Solution of the Holocaust. Meticulously documenting the process that led to this fatal development, Browning shows that Adolf Hitler was the key decision-maker throughout, approving major escalations in Nazi persecution of the Jews at victory-induced moments of euphoria.

    Abstract: Am 23. Februar 1943 wird Erwin Tichauer im Rahmen der sogenannten Fabrik-Aktion verhaftet und von Berlin nach Auschwitz deportiert. Er arbeitet in den Kohlengruben des Außenlagers Jawischowitz und später bei den Weichsel-Union-Werken. Nach der Befreiung durch die Alliierten lebt er einige Monate im Displaced Persons Camp Feldafing, bis er mit seiner Frau Helen nach Australien auswandert. Sein beruflicher Werdegang führt ihn in die USA, wo er als Professor für Biomechanik in New York lehrt. Dort stirbt er, 76jährig, am 4. Mai 1996. Erwin Tichauer zeichnete seine Erinnerungen bereits zwei Jahre nach der Befreiung auf. Detailliert beschreibt er die Hoffnung und Verzweiflung seiner Leidensgenossen im Konzentrationslager, die Begegnung der Opfer mit den Tätern und den Versuch einiger Häftlinge, das Krematorium in Auschwitz zu sprengen. Um den Häftlingsalltag möglichst lebendig abzubilden, wählte Tichauer die Form eines mit fiktionalen Elementen durchsetzten Erlebnisberichtes. Jürgen Matthäus, der 1999 als Gastprofessor am Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung lehrte und Historiker am United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington ist, erhielt das Manuskript von Helen Tichauer, die mehrere vergebliche Versuche unternahm, die Erinnerungen ihres Mannes zu publizieren. Matthäus edierte die Aufzeichnungen und versah sie mit einem Nachwort.
