Abstract:
Based on a lecture delivered in English at a conference entitled "The 'Shoah': One Generation Later", held in New York in 1975. A personal response to the theological question by a Holocaust survivor of the Warsaw ghetto, Majdanek, and Dachau. He, his wife, and small son survived the Holocaust. Donat states that the Shoah cannot be explained within the framework of religion; God's existence or absence cannot be proved logically. Donat retains hope in Judaism (and the Jewish people) without God. He describes the views of religious leaders and thinkers both during the war and after, concluding that to believe in God after Auschwitz is an insult to our intelligence.
