Abstract:
Discusses the problem of commemoration of Holocaust victims vis-à-vis preservation of the memory of the victims of the Great Patriotic War, based on the case of Zmiyovskaya Balka in Rostov-on-Don. Zmiyovskaya Balka (a ravine on the outskirts of Rostov-on-Don) was the site of the greatest Nazi murder of Jews in Russia in August 1942. In August 2012 the authorities in Rostov-on-Don removed a plaque which was placed at the memorial site in Zmiyovskaya Balka in 1992 commemorating the Jews who were murdered there, and restored the previous plaque which described "Soviet citizens" as the victims of the massacre.
