Abstract:
Analyzes the Vatican document on the Holocaust, "We Remember", published in March 1998. States that Christianity emerged and developed as "a new reading of Judaism" and at the same time rejected and demonized the Jews up to the modern era. Focuses on attitudes of the Church towards the Jews during World War II: condemnation of racial antisemitism and Nazism alternated with the Concordat and collaboration. Discusses Pope Pius XII's stand, explained as fear of brutal retribution against the Jews should he come out with an official condemnation. Outlines a dual "ecclesiology" reflected in the attitude of the Church as institution (e.g. the Pope) and that of the local bishops (e.g. in France). The Vatican claims that while keeping official silence, Pius XII encouraged help for and solidarity with the Jews at the local level. Notes that the Vatican document does not relate to the collaboration of the Church and the Vatican with fascist and Nazi officials fleeing Europe at the end of the war.
