The Shoah has ignited theological reflections on the role of "radical evil" in the world, in addition to questions of redemption. Asks if Zionism and the foundation of the State of Israel can be interpreted on a communitarian level as a kind of redemption of the Shoah; concludes that on an individual level any kind of redemption is impossible. Discusses the interpretation of a witness of the Shoah, the Orthodox Jew Simha Elberg, author of "Aqedat Treblinka." His book envisions the Shoah as a test of faith for the Jews, where Hitler is both absolute evil and an instrument of education for the Jews. Faith in the Torah was the way chosen by Elberg to fight evil. Citing Hannah Arendt in "The Human Condition, " defines radical evil as an offense that we can neither forgive nor punish.
