Abstract: A documentary from Carpathian Ruthenia introducing its development, inhabitants and historic sights. Having crossed the national borders, spectators encounter a view of the local landscape. A horse-drawn wain crosses a river, women wash laundry. The river is dammed by a wooden dam and a watermill. The film tries to capture the lifestyle of the local inhabitants (funfair in Bohdan, wedding, folk costumes of Rusyns and Hutsuls). Architectonic and historic sights are represented by churches, bell towers, Byzantine rotunda, cloisters, cemeteries. We can see traditional wooden dwellings as well as a Gypsy village. The picture presents also shots of mansions (castles and their ruins, castle). The next part of the document deals with agriculture predominately. Herds graze on meadows. We can see shepherd's huts, harvest of hemp, tobacco and grapevine as well as horse breeding and their dressage. Follows timber industry, weaving and salt mines. We learn about the local spa economy. In the market time, we visit the town of Mukachevo with numerous Jewish populations. Great attention is paid to education. Among the school buildings presented here, there is, for example, a Jewish high school in Mukachevo and a Gypsy school in Uzhhorod. The film captures, among others, Minister of Education Ivan Dérer and politician Anton Beskid. The final sequence of the film shows construction of roads, a dam, power plant and slaughterhouse.
