Abstract: Man Ray (1890–1976), a founding father of Dada and a key player in French Surrealism, is one of the central artists of the twentieth century. He is also one of the most elusive. In this new biography, journalist and critic Arthur Lubow uses Man Ray’s Jewish background as one filter to understand his life and art. Man Ray began life as Emmanuel Radnitsky, the eldest of four children born in Philadelphia to a mother from Minsk and a father from Kiev. When he was seven the family moved to the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, where both parents worked as tailors. Defying his parents’ expectations that he earn a university degree, Man Ray instead pursued his vocation as an artist, embracing the modernist creed of photographer and avant-garde gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz. When at the age of thirty Man Ray relocated to Paris, he, unlike Stieglitz, made a clean break with his past.

Abstract: "Stanley Kubrick: New York Jewish Intellectual locates Kubrick in the intellectual milieu of New York, considering how his origins and ethnicity impacted his work. Although Kubrick was not defined as a New York Intellectual, a member of that group of self-defined American writers and literary critics based in New York City in the mid-twentieth century, he was still a part of their company. There were many similarities between Kubrick and the Jewish New York Intellectuals: Kubrick's films engaged with the same dilemmas and explored the same paradoxes as they did. In many ways his lifelong commitments mirrored theirs, and he took part in many of the same debates through his work, reflecting the concerns of the post-Holocaust world. Stanley Kubrick argues that in his films, Kubrick manifested a New York Jewish sensibility. Although Kubrick said very little about his religion or ethnicity, its impact is apparent in his films where the Holocaust is approached obliquely. His films were clearly involved in the search for meaning, much of which can be attributed to a Jewish upbringing that influenced him, consciously or otherwise. Thus his films did engage with Jewish texts and his secular identity was much more complex than the labels of atheism and agnosticism suggest. Kubrick demonstrated a commitment to the dynamics of ethics and ethnicity that also informed his craft, like working with identifiably Jewish actors and actresses"--

Abstract: A film-centric portrait of the extraordinarily gifted movie director whose decades-long influence on American popular culture is unprecedented. “Everything about me is in my films,” Steven Spielberg has said. Taking this as a key to understanding the hugely successful moviemaker, Molly Haskell explores the full range of Spielberg’s works for the light they shine upon the man himself. Through such powerhouse hits as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones, to lesser-known masterworks like A.I. and Empire of the Sun, to the haunting Schindler’s List, Haskell shows how Spielberg’s uniquely evocative filmmaking and story-telling reveal the many ways in which his life, work, and times are entwined. Organizing chapters around specific films, the distinguished critic discusses how Spielberg’s childhood in non-Jewish suburbs, his parents’ traumatic divorce, his return to Judaism upon his son’s birth, and other events echo in his work. She offers a brilliant portrait of the extraordinary director—a fearful boy living through his imagination who grew into a man whose openness, generosity of spirit, and creativity have enchanted audiences for more than 40 years.

Abstract: In Paris in 1934, a young and beautiful émigrée from Germany, Gerda Pohorylles, met a Hungarian political exile, André Friedmann. They reinvented themselves as the photographers Gerda Taro and Robert Capa - and he would become the most important photojournalist of his generation. When Gerda was killed in the Spanish Civil war at the age of twenty-six, Robert Capa was her most notable mourner. Her funeral drew crowds of thousands and she became a hero of the political left. Despite the legend that was built around her, she subsequently became a mere footnote in Capa's story. Seventy years after her death a long-lost suitcase was discovered in Mexico, containing thousands of negatives by Capa and Taro. Most astonishingly of all, the 'Mexican suitcase' showed that photographs that had been attributed previously to Capa were, in fact, the work of Taro. Jane Rogoyska's book will trace Taro's life and reveal the depth of her relationship with Capa. Charismatic and extraordinary, they epitomised one of the most tumultuous periods of the century

Abstract: Leni Riefenstahl, the woman best known as "Hitler's filmmaker," is one of the most controversial personalities of the twentieth century. Her story is one of huge talent and huger ambition, one that probes the sometimes blurred borders dividing art and beauty from truth and humanity. Two of her films, Olympia and Triumph of the Will, are universally regarded as among the greatest and most innovative documentaries ever made, but they are also insidious glorifications of Hitler and the Third Reich. Relying on new sources--including interviews with her colleagues and intimate friends, as well as on previously unknown recordings of Riefenstahl herself--biographer Bach untangles the truths and lies behind this gifted woman's lifelong self-vindication as an apolitical artist who claimed she knew nothing of the Holocaust and denied her complicity with the criminal regime she both used and sanctified.--From publisher description.

Abstract: "In 1992, Art Spiegelman's two-volume illustrated novel Maus: A Survivor's Tale was awarded a special-category Pulitzer Prize. In it, Spiegelman tells the gripping story of his father's experiences in the Holocaust. The book portrays the trials Spiegelman's father endured as a Jewish refugee in the ghettos and concentration camps of Poland during World War II, his difficulties assimilating to American life following his immigration to New York, and the author's own troubled sense of self as he grapples with his father's history." "Ten scholars explore many aspects of the pivotal work, including Spiegelman's use of animal characters, the influence of other "comix" artists, the role of the mother and its relation to gender issues, the use of repeating images such as smoke and blood, Maus's place among Holocaust testimonials, its appropriation of cinematic technique, its use of language and styles of dialect, and the implications of the work's critical and commercial success."--BOOK JACKET.
