Abstract: The second half of the 15th century saw an increase in hostility and aggression against Jews in Portugal. This was caused by economic hardship, which aroused old prejudices and stereotypes, and by the mass immigration to Portugal of Spanish Jews and Conversos who were escaping the violence in Castile and Aragón. As an example of these tensions, discusses the anti-Jewish sermons of the priest Mestre Paulo in Braga, who coerced the Jews to listen to his sermons and forbade Christians to have any contact with Jews who did not attend them. In 1481 the Jews of Braga complained to King Alfonse V, demanding his protection. The king ordered the secular and ecclesiastical authorities of the city to halt Mestre Paulo's preaching, but it is not known whether his order was enforced or not.
