    Abstract: "In October 2018, a white supremacist murdered eleven Jewish worshipers and wounded six others at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the deadliest attack on Jews ever perpetrated in the United States.     Abstract: In this bold and provocative new book, Damani Partridge examines the possibilities and limits for a universalized Black politics. German youth of Turkish, Arab, and African descent use claims of Blackness to hold states and other institutions accountable for racism today. Partridge tracks how these young people take on the expressions of Black Power, acting out the scene from the 1968 Olympics, proclaiming ";I am Malcolm X,"; expressing mutual struggle with Muhammad Ali and Spike Lee, and standing with raised and clenched fists next to Angela Davis.     Abstract: "With 'A Glimpse into Medical Practice among Jews around 1500: Latin-German Pharmaceutical Glossaries in Hebrew Characters Extant in Ms Leiden, Universiteitsbibliotheek, Cod. Or. 4732/1 (SCAL 15), Fols. 1a-17b', Gerrit Bos and Klaus-Dietrich Fischer present an edition of two unique medieval lists of medico-botanical terms in Latin and German, written in Hebrew characters. Jewish physicians probably used these kinds of lists for the acquisition of pharmaceuticals they needed for the preparation of medicines. The edition with a total of 568 entries features transcriptions from the Hebrew, tables and indexes of the analysed terms in a regularized form, and a facsimile of the Leiden manuscript. Many of the German plant names featuing in the edition are not listed in the otherwise monumental reference work Wörterbuch der deutschen Pflanzennamen (Dictionary of German Plant Names) by the German botanist Heinrich Marzell. This testifies to the value of these glossaries for further research. It is also useful to see which Latin forms were in current use at the time of creation of the edition"--

    Abstract: In Drunk on Genocide, Edward B. Westermann reveals how, over the course of the Third Reich, scenes involving alcohol consumption and revelry among the SS and police became a routine part of rituals of humiliation in the camps, ghettos, and killing fields of Eastern Europe. Westermann draws on a vast range of newly unearthed material to explore how alcohol consumption served as a literal and metaphorical lubricant for mass murder. It facilitated "performative masculinity," expressly linked to physical or sexual violence. Such inebriated exhibitions extended from meetings of top Nazi officials to the rank and file, celebrating at the grave sites of their victims. Westermann argues that, contrary to the common misconception of the SS and police as stone-cold killers, they were, in fact, intoxicated with the act of murder itself. Drunk on Genocide highlights the intersections of masculinity, drinking ritual, sexual violence, and mass murder to expose the role of alcohol and celebratory ritual in the Nazi genocide of European Jews. Its surprising and disturbing findings offer a new perspective on the mindset, motivation, and mentality of killers as they prepared for, and participated in, mass extermination

    Abstract: Als Marina Weisband ihre Followerschaft bei Twitter fragte, was sie so am Judentum interessiere, wurde sie mit Fragen überschüttet. Angesichts der Fülle an Themen holte sie sich Unterstützung von Eliyah Havemann. Zusammen beschlossen sie, die Fragen zunächst in der Videoreihe #FragEinenJuden bei YouTube und dann - in erweiterter Form - in einem Buch zu beantworten. Entstanden ist eine so lebendige und anschauliche Annäherung an das Judentum, wie es keine trockene Einführung zu vermitteln vermag. Denn sie listen keine Fakten auf, sondern tauschen sich aus und sprechen jeweils aus ihrer eigenen Perspektive: Marina Weisband als gläubige, nicht religiöse Jüdin und Eliyah Havemann als modern-orthodoxer Jude. Nicht immer sind sie sich einig - und genau das spiegelt die Vielfalt des Judentums. Es geht darum, wer Juden eigentlich sind, um die Religion allgemein, um religiöse Strömungen, um die jüdische Kultur und das Zusammenleben und nicht zuletzt um Antisemitismus

    Abstract: "This book deals with two very painful and traumatic events in Jewish and Palestinian history...the Holocaust and the Nakba. Both events, which differ in nature and in degree, have had a decisive impact on the subsequent history, consciousness and identities of the two peoples. The Holocaust has become a central component of Jewish identity, particularly since the late 1970s and the 1980s, in Israel and around the world. The Nakba and its persisting consequences have become a crucial part of Palestinian and Arab identities since 1948. For the Palestinians, the Nakba is not merely about their defeat, their ethnic cleansing from Palestine and the loss of their homeland, nor even about having become a people most of whom live as refugees outside their land, and a minority living under occupation in their own land. The Nakba also represents the destruction of hundreds of villages and urban neighborhoods, along with the cultural, economic, political and social fabric of the Palestinian people. It is the violent and irreparable disruption of the modern development of Palestinian culture, society, and national consciousness. It is the ongoing colonization of Palestine that continues to the present through colonial practices and polices like Jewish settlements, illegal land acquisition, and the emptying of villages"...

    Abstract: How do we individually remember the Holocaust? How do we commemorate it collectively? That is the starting point of the draft of a new theory about memory
    Abstract: Obwohl das Thema »Gedächtnis« Teil eines großen Diskurses innerhalb der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften ist, fehlt es bislang an einer Gedächtnistheorie, die einen echten epistemischen Nutzen für die Geschichtswissenschaft aufweist. Mit Hilfe der soziologischen Systemtheorie von Niklas Luhmann überträgt Juliane Reil konstruktive Ansätze aus den Theorien von Jan Assmann, Pierre Nora und Johannes Fried in ein integratives Modell von Gedächtnistheorie. Dabei wird das komplexe Zusammenspiel von Gedächtnisprozessen auf individueller und kollektiver Ebene anhand von prominenten Beispielen des praktischen Umgangs mit dem Holocaust (etwa den vielerorts gelegten »Stolpersteinen«) deutlich gemacht

    Abstract: Americans like to insist that we are living in a postracial, color-blind society. In fact, racist thought is alive and well; it has simply become more sophisticated and more insidious. And as historian Ibram X. Kendi argues, racist ideas in this country have a long and lingering history, one in which nearly every great American thinker is complicit. Kendi chronicles the entire story of anti-Black racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. Stamped from the Beginning uses the lives of five major American intellectuals to offer a window into the contentious debates between assimilationists and segregationists and between racists and antiracists.     Abstract: Die Neurochirurgie hat sich vor gut 100 Jahren aus der Chirurgie und der Neurologie entwickelt. Als 1933 die Nationalsozialisten in Deutschland die Schlüsselstellen der Macht übernahmen, begann das Spezialgebiet gerade erst, sich als eigenständiges Fach zu etablieren. Von 69 damals hirnchirurgisch tätigen Ärzten wurden 13 aus rassistischen Gründen verfolgt. Zu ihnen zählten einige der erfahrensten deutschen Neurochirurgen. Fast alle flohen aus ihrer Heimat und kehrten nicht wieder zurück. Die Lücken, die sie hinterließen, wurden nie benannt. In der Emigration gelang es nur den jüngsten von ihnen, in der Neurochirurgie wieder Fuß zu fassen. Dieses Buch widmet sich den wissenschaftlichen Verdiensten der Vertriebenen und zeichnet ihre Biografien und Emigrationswege nach.

    Abstract: "For many years before and after the establishment of the state of Israel, the belief that Israel is a Western state remained unchallenged. This belief was founded on the predominantly western composition of the pre-statehood Jewish community known as the Yishuv. The relatively homogenous membership of Israeli/Jewish society as it then existed was soon altered with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Jewish immigrants from Middle Eastern countries during the early years of statehood. Seeking to retain the western character of the Jewish state, the Israeli government initiated a massive acculturation project aimed at westernizing the newcomers. More recently scholars and intellectuals began to question the validity and logic of that campaign. With the emergence of new forms of identity, or identities, two central questions emerged; to what extent can we accept the ways in which people define themselves? And on a more fundamental level; what weight should we give to the ways in which people define themselves? This book suggests ways of tackling these questions and provides varying perspectives on identity, put forward by scholars interested in the changing nature of Israeli identity. Their observations and conclusions are not exclusive, but inclusive, suggesting that there cannot be one single Israeli identity, but several. Tackling the issue of identity, this multidisciplinary approach is an important contribution to existing literature and will be invaluable for scholars and students interested in Cultural Studies, Israel, and the wider Middle East"--

    Abstract: D'Ignaz Goldziher, qui put étudier à la grande université Al-Azhar du Caire, à Hermann Vambéry qui, déguisé en derviche, gagna Samarkande à pied, à la recherche des origines ouzbèkes supposées de la langue hongroise, les savants juifs des XIXe et XXe siècles eurent un rapport privilégié avec l'Orient, entendu comme l'espace dans lequel s'est déployée la culture arabo-musulmane, mais qui désigne aussi l'ensemble des pays extérieurs à la loi chrétienne, comme en attestent les travaux des indianistes Sylvain Lévi ou Theodor Benfey. « Passeurs d'Orients », donc, ils participent activement d'un mouvement qui fonde une science nouvelle, originellement philologique, mais aussi science des religions, que les clivages du second XXe siècle aura tôt fait de qualifier de "colonialiste", quand il s'est agi, surtout, d'en dégager la dimension singulière, au regard d'un Occident désorienté. À travers les plus grandes figures de l'orientalisme, le volume, issu en partie d'un colloque qui eut lieu au Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme de Paris en 2012, retrace à la fois l'histoire et les implications de cette relation particulière et en dénoue les malentendus idéologiques et politiques. Perrine Simon Nahum (1960) est historienne et chargée de recherches au CNRS. elle est également en charge d'une collection d'essais chez Grasset. After enslaved Africans were initially brought to America, the offspring of black and white sexual relationships (consensual and forced) complicated the purely visual sense of racial typing. As mixed-race people became more and more common and as antebellum race-based slavery and then postbellum racial segregation became central to southern society, white southerners asserted that they could rely on their other senses - touch, smell, sound, and taste - to identify who was "white" and who was not. Sensory racial stereotypes were invented and irrational, but at every turn, Smith shows, these constructions of race, immune to logic, signified difference and perpetuated inequality."--BOOK JACKET.

Campt's Other Germans tells the story Germany's Black Citizens and the complicated ways in which members of this population managed to survive Germany's most painful and perplexing epoch, the Third Reich. Campt focuses her path-breaking study of the Holocaust primarily on race, rather than anti-Semitism." "By centering on Germany's Black community rather than its Jewish population, Campt is able to examine a very different question than many other studies of Nazi Germany: What happens when we view the Holocaust not through the history of anti-Semitism but through the ideology of racial purity that fueled the regime's fundamental organization? From this vantage point, the book reveals how, in the service of "racial purity," the regime produced some of the very subjects it ultimately sought to destroy."
