Abstract: Recently declassified French documentation and continuing scholarly discussion show that Vichy France's antisemitic legislation was no mere consequence of German antisemitic measures imposed in the Occupied Zone in summer 1940. One must differentiate between the economic persecution of Jews in France, in which the German occupational forces were the main actors, and measures of the French government, which enacted its own "racial" legislation. Franco-German collaboration started only in autumn 1940, after the promulgation of the first French racial legislation. From then on the Germans started to intervene in French antisemitic measures. By spring 1942 the Germans dominated action against the Jews in France, and harshly implemented their own Holocaust-related measures with less and less support from the French government, which was reluctant to go beyond its own antisemitic policy. This article traces French antisemitic traditions in government and administration before and after 1940, and then discusses Franco-German interaction in the introduction of racial legislation and economic persecution of the Jews.

Abstract: After the German occupation of Belgium, Luxembourg, and Northern France in spring 1940, tens of thousands of Jewish refugees fled to the Unoccupied Zone of France, some thousands of them to the spa resort of Vichy. A few weeks later, remnants of the French government also relocated to Vichy. Many of the Jewish refugees greeted the arrival of Marshal Pétain, hoping for his protection. However, as this article shows, Vichy proved anything but a safe haven. A rigorous policy of evictions reduced the number of Jews there from a few thousand in 1940, and 600 in 1943, to a handful in 1944. These evictions raise questions about institutionalized violence prior to the turning point of 1942, when French officials deported tens of thousands of Jews to German death camps. Forcing Jews out of Vichy left them easy prey to the Milice and the Gestapo, increasing the likelihood of arrest and deportation.

Abstract: During the German occupation of France, the "Jewish service" of the Police Prefecture was the primary institution responsible for monitoring Jews in the Paris region. This study concerns this largely unknown bureaucratic organization and its staff, focusing on the establishment of the index card registry known as the Fichier juif, and the manner in which Jews were received in the service's offices. Using administrative archives and unpublished private sources (from two important former officers of the service, Hubert Le Fur and Pierre Vayssettes), the author details the background, mindset, and professional ethos of such bureaucrats. A tradition of bureaucratic competence motivated Le Fur, Vayssettes, and their colleagues to seek "best" solutions to improve the system of persecution.

Abstract: Police Inspector-General Guido Lospinoso has long been praised for the rescue of Jews before September 8, 1943 in Italian-occupied Southeastern France. This study proves that Lospinoso never embarked on a personal mission to do so. In fact, he implemented orders to evacuate foreign Jews from the Mediterranean coast under Italian rule. He was initially obedient when Rome ordered him to surrender some of those Jews to the Nazis-although nobody carried the order to completion. Ultimately, Lospinoso's actions epitomize the complexities of Fascist Italy's stand vis-à-vis the Nazi policy of extermination.

Abstract: On October 3, 1941 the French right-wing Mouvement Social Révolutionnaire (MSR) bombed six synagogues and one Jewish prayer house in Paris. The only scholarship addressing this "Nuit Bleue" focuses on the Nazi Security and Police Service, who provided the explosives but neither planned nor executed the attacks. Below, the authors restore memory of the bombings and re-establish French agency and culpability. They also explore Jewish reaction and resistance. The authors argue that the MSR created a "Holocaust Landscape" in Paris, with serious implications for Jews in Occupied and Unoccupied France. Several threads of the narrative thus interject the story of the bombings into the larger history of the Shoah.

Abstract: As the child of Holocaust survivors, I had thought that after more than seventy-five years little else could be learnt. But I was wrong. After my second journey to Ukraine and Transnistria in order to discover how my family had survived when hundreds of thousands of Jews had perished, I realized just how much so. Bukovina's Jews from Romania, Ukraine and Bessarabia had faced horrific pogroms, forced evacuations and death marches, and had then crossed the Dniester River into Transnistria. These are lesser known topics in Holocaust history. Of the 450,000 Jews sent there, approximately 250,000 died, not by guns, gas or ovens but through thirst, starvation, disease and bullet-free mass murders carried out by the Nazis and their Romanian allies. Transnistria’s Holocaust history must be visited and revised. We owe it to the survivors, ourselves, our children and to history itself, before altering what has been written, or not, becomes impossible.

Abstract: This article examines rumors about a liquid poison used by parts of the Einsatzgruppen to kill Jewish children in the Soviet Union, specifically by applying poison to their lips. Accounts of poisoning are preserved in Russian-language archival documents and continue to circulate in Russia up to the present. Yet these accounts are often challenged by other archival sources, which focus on the use of gas vans in mass killings. Taking events in the Southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don as a starting point, the article traces accounts of poisoning and asks how we should understand these accounts and what role rumors played during the Holocaust in the Soviet Union.

Abstract: This article discusses the use of Nazi sources for the study of Fascist Italy's policy towards Jews in 1940-1943. By exposing the gap between the Nazi perception of and the reality of the Fascist policy towards Jews in Italian-occupied south-eastern France, the article demonstrates that Rome's refusal to hand over Jews for deportation did not contradict the fundamental antisemitic nature of its Jewish policy in that context. Thus, the article highlights the risks for historians to read the Fascist Jewish policy through Nazi lenses and thereby fall prey to stereotypical characterizations of the Italians as insubordinate, scheming and driven by what an SS official disparagingly labelled a "Jewish-friendly attitude". At the same time, the article shows that, when combined with Fascist sources, Nazi sources can help shed light on the conceptual divide that underpinned the Axis partners' disagreement over the means by which the "Jewish problem" should be "solved", thereby exposing the analytical limitations of the current prevailing understanding of the Fascist refusal to hand over the Jews as purely the outcome of "pragmatic" opportunistic considerations.

Abstract: This special issue of the Journal of Modern Italian Studies, edited by Annalisa Capristo and Ernest Ialongo, marks the 80th anniversary of the implementation of the Racial Laws in Fascist Italy. It is an opportunity to assess the evolution of the historical literature on Fascist anti-Semitism and to mark future directions for research, but also to pay homage to Michele Sarfatti, who was critical in the development of the current state of the historiography on the subject. Where the earlier work, before the 1980s, was founded on the idea of "Italiani brava gente", wherein Italy's role was downplayed in the persecution of the Jews and in the Holocaust, that Italians were simply too humane to have participated in such horrific events, Sarfatti's work launched a veritable revolution in the field, which dismantled all the tenets of the original consensus. This introduction surveys these developments, and summarizes the contributions of the varied authors published here who continue to challenge old truths and bring us closer to a more full and accurate understanding of Fascist anti-Semitism.

Abstract: This article aims to reconstruct the activities of the Board of Jewish Deputies, the central representative body of British Jewry, in support of the Italian Jews affected by the Fascist Racial Laws of 1938. By analysing the institution's documents and examining the most widely read Jewish newspaper in the U.K., the Jewish Chronicle, this research investigates how the initial phase of the Italian anti-Semitic campaign was received in Great Britain, and what measures were put in place by British Jewry in their attempts to help the Italian Jews. The Jewish historian, Cecil Roth, played an important role during this phase, in active collaboration with the leadership of the Board and the staff of the Jewish Chronicle, gathering as much information as possible on Italy and its history in order to shed light on the events that were taking place during the first years of the Racial Laws and until the entrance of Italy into WWII (1938-1940). The involvement of certain members of the Foreign Office with links to the Board, and the shared goal of helping Italian Jewry, was also fundamental in this period.

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to rethink the concept of Lebensraum and its significant role in Nazi policies. During World War II, the notion of Lebensraum increasingly transcended its original geographic-geopolitical and agricultural frameworks. Nazi policy was based on the idea of racially homogenizing existing as well as conquered space. As opposed to earlier colonial land seizure, the Nazi policies of resettlement, expulsion, and murder of racially undesirable population groups were not the consequences of the occupation policy, but rather their very purpose and objective. Focusing on the category of space, this essay identifies certain continuities as well as significant breaks between colonialism and National Socialism. The author contends that the goal of colonial rule was the economic and political subjugation of the conquered countries, which necessitated heterogeneity as a structural principle. Lebensraum, on the other hand, represented a different and unprecedented model of domination, one that did not imagine, in colonial fashion, the spaces as being empty, but rather intended to empty these spaces and radically reorganize them for the purpose of racial selection.

Abstract: In the immediate aftermath of World War II, Nietzsche was widely regarded as a thinker who instigated the selective breeding and the eugenic policies of National Socialism, indeed even its genocidal violence. In the subsequent years and decades, however, Nietzsche was largely cleared of such charges. His many defenders claimed that he was a firm protector of Judaism, his writings offering a rich and nuanced anthropological vision. This common, virtuous portrayal of Nietzsche eschews his resonant call to exterminate masses of ‘failed’ people. This jarring, portentous call, found both in his published and unpublished work, cannot be discounted and ought not to be relativized. The present essay underscores the significance of Nietzsche’s transgression of ethical limits and explores the possible consequences of the view that the state has the right to dispose of masses of its own population. It contends that in that transgression was contained, even, the possibility of the Shoah.
