    Abstract: Ist der Islam wissenschaftsfeindlich? Hat sich im Islam eine eigene Moderne und Wissenschaft entwickelt? Kann die islamische Wissenschaft Fehlentwicklungen der Moderne vermeiden oder ihr sogar als Vorbild dienen? Das Verhältnis des Islams zu Moderne und Wissenschaft wurde um 1900 von führenden europäischen Islamwissenschaftlern kontrovers diskutiert. Ihre Arbeiten enthalten polemische Abwertungen, aber auch Annäherungen an den Islam und selbstkritische Überlegungen zur Wissenschaft in Europa. Die Autorin zeigt die Vielfalt der Auseinandersetzung beispielhaft an den Arbeiten von drei Gründungsvätern der Islamwissenschaft: Ignaz Goldziher, Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje und Carl Heinrich Becker. Damit liefert sie einen Einblick in die Entstehung der Islamwissenschaft, ihr Verhältnis zum zeitgenössischen Islam und die Internationalisierung der Wissenschaften. --
