Abstract: Like Sholem Aleichem, on whose Motl Peysi: "The Cantor's Son" and "The Enchanted Tailor" stories "Laughter Through Tears" is based, director Gricher-Cherikover leavens pathos with humor in his earthy portrait of prerevolutionary shtetl life. Motl's father dies, leaving him to survive on his own in a changing world while the tailor Shimen-Elye buys a she-goat which mysteriously changes gender each time its new owner stops at the inn between Kozodoyevka, where he purchased the creature, and Zlodyevke, where he lives. In accord with then-official Soviet policies against antisemitism (which were always as odds with prevailing popular sentiments), Gricher-Cherikover emphasizes the poverty and repression of Jews under Czarist rule. Abstract: "Fiestaremos!" presents the inspiring work of musician Judy Frankel. The film explores Frankel's dedication to preserving Sephardic music and songs. Interviews with Frankel, musical excerpts and performances offer an intimate look at one of the leading collectors and practitioners of Sephardic folk music. Frankel traveled the world seeking out songs from the Sephardic tradition. In one particularly moving scene, she reads a poem written by a man from Sarajevo and then transforms it into music. Frankel's work - uncovering, recording, transcribing and performing as many Sephardic folk songs as she could find - played a vital role in preserving a history and tradition that would otherwise have been lost to future generations. Abstract: This rare, newly restored feature was originally advertised as "the first Yiddish talkie from Soviet Russia." The plot centers on Nathan Becker, a Jewish bricklayer who returns to Russia after 28 years in America. After reuniting with his father (played with comic eccentricity by Solomon Mikhoels) Nathan leaves the shtetl to work in the new industrial center of Magnitogorsk. There, he and his African-American friend Jim soon find that the work habits they acquired in America that helped them to "build New York together" conflict with the Soviet system. While the film's resolution emphasizes the triumph of socialist productivity, the screenplay by Yiddish author Peretz Markish reflects the warmth and humor of the Jewish spirit. "The Return of Nathan Becker" is the only Russian Yiddish sound feature film produced in the Soviet Union and was made for domestic consumption as well as for export to the United States. The film uses the character of Nathan Becker to dramatize of the failiure of American capitalism and assimilation, while glorifying the success and productivity of the new Soviet system. The film also depicts the shtetl way of life was backward and grotesque and promotes a shift away from this life and traditional Jewish values. Aside from its unequivocal documentary and historical value, it is a great piece of kitsch. More accurately it is a masterwork of shund - popular Yiddish lowbrow theatrical fare that was the bread and butter of Yiddish theatrical productions. As critic J. Abstract: In "I Miss the Sun" filmmaker Mary Halawani profiles her grandmother Rosette Hakim, who left Egypt for the United States in 1962. The Halawanis, a prominent Egyptian-Jewish family, fled their homeland in 1959 when Egyptian anti-Zionist sentiments increased and when hundreds of Jews, suspected of pro-Communist activities were interned in detention camps. Rosette, the family matriarch, chose to remain in Egypt until every member of the large family was free to leave. Using the Passover seder as a backdrop, Rosette (who now lives in Brooklyn) discusses life in Egypt and the contrasts between the values and textures of life there and in America. [jewishfilm.org]

Abstract: Schloss Grafeneck auf der Schwäbischen Alb war einer der ersten Orte in Deutschland, an dem Menschen systematisch, "industriell" ermordet wurden. Bis zu 11.000 Menschen starben in Grafeneck durch Kohlenstoffmonoxidgas. Die Opfer stammten aus Krankenanstalten und Heimen im heutigen Baden-Württemberg, in Bayern, Hessen und Nordrhein-Westfalen. Die meisten waren physisch oder psychisch beeinträchtigt. Die SWR- Dokumentation "Grafeneck 1940 - Die Mordfabrik auf der Schwäbischen Alb" von Knut Weinrich zeigt die Schauplätze des Geschehens ebenso wie die Lebensstationen einiger Opfer. Der Film wird am 1. Oktober um 23 Uhr im SWR Fernsehen erstausgestrahlt. In den Morden von Grafeneck zeigt sich die ganze Menschenverachtung des Regimes und seiner Verantwortlichen. Ihre Opfer bezeichneten sie als ćlebensunwerte Ballastexistenzen̮ oder auch "seelenlose Menschenhülsen". Die Verbrechen dauerten von Januar bis Dezember 1940. Sie waren Teil der von den Nationalsozialisten so genannten "Aktion T4" oder auch "Euthanasie-Aktion". Im Zentrum des Films stehen drei Opfer und deren Hinterbliebene: Emma Dapp, deren Enkel Hans-Ulrich ihre Biografie geschrieben hat, Martin Bader, dessen Sohn Helmut das Leben des Vaters recherchiert hat, und Dieter Neumaier, der als Kind ermordet wurde und dessen älterer Bruder ihn nie vergessen hat. Die Dokumentation lässt Zeitzeugen, Hinterbliebene und Experten zu Wort kommen.

Abstract: Das Haus, in dem Isa Engelmann aufgewachsen ist, hat noch immer ein grünes Dach. Doch ihre verlorene Kindheit findet sie dort nicht mehr. Auf der Suche nach ihren Wurzeln ist Isa Engelmann in die böhmische Stadt Reichenberg zurückgekehrt. Die Menschen, die im heutigen Liberec leben, sprechen jedoch nicht ihre Sprache, sondern tschechisch. Vieles hat sich seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg verändert. Auch die Synagoge gibt es nicht mehr. An ihrer Stelle ist ein modernes Bethaus entstanden, in dem die jüdische Tradition weiterlebt. Auch Edita Weitzenová konnte ihre Heimat nicht vergessen. Sie gehört zu den Überlebenden des Holocaust. Nach dem Krieg ist sie nach Reichenberg/Liberec zurückgekehrt und hat dort wieder ein Zuhause gefunden. Zwei Frauen, zwei ganz unterschiedliche Lebenswege, zwei Blicke auf dieselbe Stadt. Der Film erzählt die Geschichten von Isa, die mit ihrer Familie 1946 vertrieben wurde, und von Edita, die als Jüdin bereits 1938 vor den deutschen Besatzern fliehen musste. Und er erzählt die Geschichte einer ungewöhnlichen Begegnung. Dabei enthält sich der Film jeden Kommentars und folgt allein den Erzählungen der beiden Frauen. Ihre Erinnerungen strukturieren die gegenwärtigen und vergangenen Bildwelten. Aktuelle Aufnahmen verschmelzen mit zum Teil noch nie gezeigtem Archivmaterial. Die Prager Filmemacherin Blanka Závitkovská hat die beiden Frauen mit der Kamera begleitet. Entstanden ist dabei ein einfühlsames und bewegendes Doppelporträt. Zwei Persönlichkeiten treffen mit gänzlich unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen aufeinander und beginnen das Wagnis, sich für die Gefühle und Erlebnisse der anderen zu öffnen. Nur allmählich gelingt es ihnen, Misstrauen und Vorurteile zu überwinden. Die Stadt Liberec, auf deutsch Reichenberg, wird dabei zum Ort einer vorsichtigen Annäherung.

Abstract: Am Montag, den 30. November 2009 beginnt vor dem Münchner Schwurgericht der vielleicht letzte große NS-Prozess in der Bundesrepublik. Angeklagt ist der in der Ukraine geborene Ivan Demjanjuk. Er ist mittlerweile 89 Jahre alt. Die Staatsanwaltschaft wirft ihm vor, als Wachmann in dem von der SS geführten Vernichtungslager Sobibor Beihilfe zum Mord an 27 900 Menschen geleistet zu haben. Die Angehörigen der Opfer erhoffen sich von dem Prozess Gerechtigkeit und Klarheit über das, was dort in den Jahren 1942/43 geschah. Der Film folgt den Spuren des Ivan Demjanjuk von seiner ukrainischen Heimat über das Kriegsgefangenenlager in Chelm bis zum Lager Trawniki, in dem er mutmaßlich zum SS-Helfer ausgebildet wurde. Thomas Blatt, einer der wenigen Sobibor-Überlebenden, erzählt, was in dem Vernichtungslager wirklich geschah und welche Aufgaben die ukrainischen Wachmänner, die so genannten Trawniki, dort erfüllten. Der Film zeigt, wie Ivan Demjanjuk nach dem Krieg in die USA ging wo er zunächst ein ruhiges, bürgerliches Leben führte, dann aber vom amerikanischen OSI (Office of Special Investigations) verdächtigt wurde "Ivan der Schreckliche" zu sein, ein sadistischer Aufseher, der im Vernichtungslager Treblinka Häftlinge brutal misshandelt und eigenhändig ermordet haben soll. Er wurde nach Israel ausgeliefert und in einem aufsehenerregenden Prozess zum Tod durch den Strang verurteilt. Aber das Oberste Gericht in Israel hob das Urteil auf, nachdem Recherchen ergeben hatten , dass nicht Ivan Demjanjuk, sondern ein anderer "Ivan der Schreckliche" ist. Demjanjuk kehrte in die USA zurück, obwohl aufgrund seines SS-Ausweises bereits bekannt war, dass er in Sobibor Dienst getan hat. Aber jetzt fand er hier keine Ruhe mehr. 2001 strengte das OSI einen neuen Prozess an, diesmal in den USA. Das Gericht kam zu dem Schluss, dass Demjanjuk in verschiedenen Lagern Dienst getan hatte, darunter auch in Sobibor. Daraufhin wurde ihm die US-Staatsbürgerschaft aberkannt. Im März 2009 erließ die Staatsanwaltschaft München aufgrund von Ermittlungen der "Zentralen Stelle der Landesjustizverwaltungen zur Aufklärung nationalsozialistischer Verbrechen" Haftbefehl gegen Ivan Demjanjuk. Sie ist überzeugt, dass der gebürtige Ukrainer in Sobibor von den Deutschen als SS-Wachmann eingesetzt und an der Vernichtung Tausender Juden beteiligt war. Nun soll er sich dafür vor Gericht verantworten. Bei dem Prozess in München geht es aber nicht nur um Schuld oder Unschuld des Angeklagten Ivan Demjanjuk, es geht auch um die Glaubwürdigkeit der deutschen Justiz bei der Verfolgung von NS-Verbrechen. Deutsche SS-Männer mit einem vergleichbaren Rang wie Demjanjuk, die in Sobibor oder in anderen Vernichtungslagern Dienst taten, wurden von westdeutschen Gerichten nur dann verurteilt, wenn ihnen konkrete Mordtaten oder die Teilnahme an Exzessen nachgewiesen werden konnten. Sonst wurden sie freigesprochen. Im Fall des Ivan Demjanjuk ist die Beweislage dünn, das räumen sogar die Ermittler der Zentralen Stelle ein. Der SS-Ausweis Demjanjuks und Verlegungslisten sind die einzigen Beweise und die zeigen nur, dass Demjanjuk 1943 in Sobibor war, nicht, dass er dort eigenhändig getötet hat. Der Niederländer Christiaan F. Rüter, einer der profiliertesten Kenner der juristischen Aufarbeitung von NS-Verbrechen in Deutschland, hält eine Verurteilung Demjanjuks deshalb für sehr unwahrscheinlich. Christiaan F. Rüter: "...es ist mir völlig schleierhaft, wie irgend jemand, der die deutsche Rechtsprechung bis jetzt kennt, meinen kann, dass man ... Demjanjuk bei dieser Beweislage verurteilen kann." Folgt das Gericht der jahrzehntelangen Rechtspraxis in der Bundesrepublik, kann es Demjanjuk aufgrund dieser Beweislage nicht verurteilen. Tut es das doch, dann verstößt es gegen das Gleichheitsprinzip und die deutsche Justiz muss sich fragen lassen, warum all die anderen NS-Täter nicht verurteilt wurden. Wird Demjanjuk aber freigesprochen, wird sie viel Kritik einstecken müssen für den fragwürdigen und außerhalb Deutschlands immer wieder kritisierten schonenden Umgang mit NS-Tätern. Christiaan F. Rüter: "Wird verurteilt, dann frag ich, wo sind die tausend deutschen KZ-Bewacher? Wird nicht verurteilt, dann wird klar, dass alle Deutschen noch Nazis sind. Dieses Verfahren kannst du politisch nicht gewinnen." Damit scheint ein Verlierer des Prozesses bereits festzustehen: die deutsche Justiz. Warum aber hat die Zentrale Stelle die Ermittlungen gegen Demjanjuk vorangetrieben und sie an die Staatsanwaltschaft weitergegeben, obwohl sie davon ausgehen musste, dass die Beweise nach der bisherigen Rechtspraxis für eine Verurteilung nicht ausreichen würden? Weil es keinen Anspruch auf "Gleichheit im Unrecht" gebe und sich Demjanjuk deshalb vor Gericht verantworten müsse, so eine Vertreterin der Zentralen Stelle. Kirsten Goetze: "Da gab es andere Verfahren, die vielleicht nicht...meinem Rechtsverständnis entsprechend abgeschlossen worden sind. Es würde dann sicher auch die Frage aufwerfen, ist es gerecht, wenn man John Demjanjuk nicht verfolgen würde. Er hat, um das juristisch auszudrücken, keinen Anspruch ... auf eine "Gleichheit im Unrecht." Der Rechtsexperte Christiaan F. Rüter sieht noch einen anderen Grund. Für ihn ist die Zentrale Stelle im Jahr ihres 50-jährigen Bestehens in Schwierigkeiten. In den letzten zwanzig Jahren sei den Ludwigsburger Ermittlern, die Jahrzehnte erfolgreich nach NS-Tätern gesucht hatten, kein wirklich großer Fisch mehr ins Netz gegangen. Weil die meisten NS-Täter mittlerweile gestorben seien, hätten sie Probleme, ihre Behörde zu legitimieren. Deshalb, so Rüter, hätte die Zentrale Stelle den Fall des kleinen Wachmannes Ivan Demjanjuk genutzt, um rechtzeitig zur Feier ihres 50-jährigen Bestehens noch einmal groß in die Schlagzeilen zu kommen. Dass Demjanjuk immer noch der Ruf anhaftet, "Ivan der Schreckliche" zu sein, sei da gerade recht gekommen. Christiaan F. Rüter: "Die Zentrale Stelle braucht einen Posaunenstoß, um davon abzulenken und sein 50-jähriges Bestehen zu feiern. Dazu ist Demjanjuk ungewöhnlich geeignet, denn anders als all die kleinen deutschen Demjanjuks und die kleinen ukrainischen Demjanjuks, die unbehelligt in der Bundesrepublik leben, klebt an diesem Demjanjuk noch immer "Ivan der Schreckliche", obwohl er es nicht war." Damit ist der Prozess gegen Ivan Demjanjuk auch zum Prüfstein für die Glaubwürdigkeit der Zentralen Stelle geworden.

Abstract: Winter 1944: Dekan Hermann K. Zeller und seine Frau Elsbeth verstecken das jüdische Ehepaar Krakauer in ihrem Pfarrhaus in Waiblingen, dreimal hintereinander. Das jüdische Ehepaar überlebt. Die noch lebenden Töchter, ihre Kinder und andere Verwandte empfinden heute die Rettung der Verfolgten als "selbstverständlich und normal". Die überlebenden Opfer der Schoa nennen jene Christen, die in der Zeit der Nationalsozialisten Juden retteten, "Gerechte aus den Völkern". Zu ihnen zählt das württembergische Pfarrerehepaar Zeller. Autor Günther B. Ginzel begibt sich auf eine bewegende Spurensuche. Der jüdische Autor entdeckt nicht nur die Leidensgeschichte des Ehepaars Krakauer und deren Rettung durch fromme Christen, sondern er blickt wie in einen Spiegel: Auch seine Eltern verdanken ihr Leben sogenannten "unbesungenen Helden". Der Film ist nicht nur eine Zeitreise in die Vergangenheit: Von der geretteten Familie Krakauer lebt heute, 70 Jahre später, niemand mehr; doch der Autor trifft die Nachkommen der Zellers, Enkel und Ur-Enkel. Und er stellt fest: das Vorbild der Groß- und Urgroßeltern und deren Erbe leben weiter.

Abstract: The March (1999): Both my parents were in Auschwitz and survived "The Death March." My father, deceased since 1979, never spoke about his experiences. My mother, on the other hand, continuously made references to the "miracle" of her survival and recounted in vivid detail what it was like to walk for miles in the bitter cold with just a blanket and a pair of wooden shoes ("Trepches"). She tells a story of how one night when the entire column of inmates took a rest at a nearby farm, she found a small sack of sugar cubes in a hay loft, which kept her and a companion alive for several days. She recalls how the German soldiers would confront a weakened inmate who paused for a moment's rest with the following shout: "Kanst du lofen?" (can you walk?) Abstract: Based on the novel "Love and Passion" by Isidore Zolotarefsky "Love and Sacrifice" is a prime example of "shund", the melodramatic theatrical escapist entertainment of the Yiddish theater. It opened at the Clinton Theater April 7, 1936 and was held over three weeks as the most popular Yiddish movie the Clinton had shown to date. Produced by Joseph Seiden over two days in a loft in New York City on a miniscule budget, this tale of a middle-class matron who shoots the man who compromises her was a tremendous success. The story of a long-suffering mother who goes to prison for shooting a would-be suitor employs many archetypes of Yiddish theater. From the conflict between the sacrificing mother and the homewrecking schemer, to the reunion of parent and child at a celebratory wedding the film provides a classic example of the Yiddish-American cinema. Abstract: This semi-documentary film (and Poland's last Yiddish feature) features the comedy duo Shimon Dzigan and Israel Shumacher who had recently returned from the Soviet Union, and Jewish children who had survived the Holocaust. Directed on location by Nathan Gross and Shaul Goskind at at the JDC-supported Helenowek Colony, an orphanage and school near Lodz, this film includes Dzigan and Shumacher's virtuoso turn as all the characters in Sholem Aleichem's Kasrilevke Brent (Kasrilevke is Burning), and an exchange of roles where they become the children's audience. Abstract: This short provides an interesting early example of a Jewish screen character: the nebbish who dreams of physical prowess. The character, Moshe, is sad about not winning the heavyweight championship and decides on a rematch. Introduced at the fight as weighing 98 pounds, Moshe is afraid when the "champ" is introduced at 240 pounds. When his "second" administers dope via a syringe, Moshe, who had been losing up to that point, defeats the champ and is the hero. Then, he wakes up and realizes it was all a dream. [jewishfilm.org]

Abstract: "The Jester" was co-directed by Joseph Green and Jan Nowina-Przybylsk in 1937, following the great success of their film "Yiddle with His Fiddle" the previous year. Green who had emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1924, returned to Poland with the American Yiddish theater stars (and then married couple) Miriam Kressyn and Hymie Jacobson for the procuction. Shot on location on a farm outside of Warsaw and in the predominantly-Jewish town of Kazimierz, near Lublin, the film also stars Zygmunt Turkow, co-founder with Ida Kaminska of the Warsaw Yiddish Art Theater. The film premiered in Warsaw in September 1937 and opened in New York City three months later. This musical drama stars a lonely wanderer, a circus performer and Esther, the shoemaker's daughter, whose family tries to marry her into a prominent family. One of the film's centerpieces is a Purim shpil (Purim play) with its parade of costumes and music. The Jester's lively circus and vaudeville music and set pieces provide a glimpse of Warsaw's then-thriving Yiddish revues and cabarets, which were destroyed soon after. Many of the film's Polish-Jewish crew and actors were killed during the Holocaust, giving the film's touches of melancholy an even more profound reading for today's audiences. Another important historical note: In 1941, the Nazis appropriated a segment from The Jester's Purim play scene for use in their notorious antisemitic propaganda film "Der ewige Jude" (The Eternal Jew). Abstract: Der Dokumentarfilm erzählt das Schicksal der Opfer des Todesmarsches an die ostpreußische Bernsteinküste im Januar 1945. Etwa 1.700 Menschen wurden auf der zugefrorenen Ostsee ermordet. Etwa 7.500 Gefangene, die meisten von ihnen junge jüdische Frauen aus Osteuropa, arbeiten in den ostpreußischen Außenlagern des KZ Stutthof, als Mitte Januar 1945 der Befehl eintrifft, alle Lager in Ostpreußen zu räumen. Auf einem Marsch durch Ostpreußen werden die Gefangenen über Königsberg bis nach Palmnicken getrieben, einem kleinem Dorf an der samländischen Bernsteinküste, wo sie in der Nacht des 31. Januar 1945 auf die zugefrorene Ostsee geführt und erschossen werden. Etwa 200 Menschen überleben das Massaker auf dem Eis und fliehen in die umliegenden Dörfer. Es beginnt eine von der SS veranlasste Jagd auf die Überlebenden, an der sich Einwohner und die Palmnicker Hitlerjugend beteiligen. Nur wenige überleben den Todesmarsch und noch weniger das Kriegsende - versteckt bei Anwohnern und Bauern, die die Überlebenden bei sich aufnehmen. Eine der Überlebenden ist Maria Blitz. Anhand von Marias Erinnerungen und den Berichten von weiteren Überlebenden und Zeitzeugen zeichnet der Film die historischen Ereignisse an den heutigen Originalschauplätzen in Polen und Russland nach.

Abstract: Die Geschichte von Karneval und Fastnacht im Nationalsozialismus gehört zu den verdrängten Kapiteln der Vergangenheit. Das ist erklärlich: Das Verhalten der meisten Vereine ab 1933 ist alles andere als ein Ruhmesblatt. Zivilcourage gegen das neue braune Denken findet man nur selten, dafür aber viele Fälle von eiliger Anpassung und freiwilliger Unterwerfung. Seit dem Machtantritt Hitlers unternehmen die Nationalsozialisten allerhand, um den Karneval ideologisch für ihre Zwecke nutzen zu können. Protest - etwa gegen die vielen judenfeindlichen Maßnahmen - gibt es kaum, Selbstbehauptung erfolgt im Regelfall nur dort, wo es um den Erhalt der organisatorischen Selbstbestimmung des Karnevals geht. Ansonsten biedern sich die Karnevalisten nicht selten an die neuen Herren im Land an, wenn nicht sogar Konsens und gegenseitiges Einvernehmen herrscht. Die Dokumentation von Frank Gutermuth und Sebastian Kuhn begibt sich auf Spurensuche in den Karnevalshochburgen Köln und Mainz, findet aber auch bemerkenswerte Geschichten von leisem Widerstand in einem Dorf am Rande von Frankfurt und von "echt nationalsozialistischem" Frohsinn in Nürnberg, der Stadt der Reichsparteitage. Abstract: "Wir sind christliche, muslimische und jüdische Köche und kommen mit scharfen Messern, bis an die Zähne bewaffnet in die Küche", meint Kevork Alemian, Maitre d´Hotel im legendären American Colony in Jerusalem. Und er fügt mit verschmitztem Lächeln hinzu: "Aber die scharfen Messer sind nicht dafür da, um uns gegenseitig abzustechen, sondern um zusammen für den Frieden zu kochen." Kevork Alemian ist Gründer der "Chefs for Peace", der Köche für den Frieden. Seit sieben Jahren kochen israelische und palästinensische Starköche zusammen Galadinner für Feinschmecker - egal ob jenseits ihrer Friedensoase Krieg herrscht oder die Politiker über Frieden verhandeln. Ins Leben gerufen wurde die Gruppe, als sich vier Chefköche - ein jüdischer Israeli, ein christlich-arabischer Israeli, ein Armenier und ein muslimischer Palästinenser - auf einem Slow Food Festival in Italien kennenlernten. Schnell begriffen sie, wie viel sie voneinander lernen konnten. "Seitdem sind meine besten Lehrer palästinensische Mütter", schwärmt Moshe Basson, ein jüdischer Chefkoch, der so gut Arabisch spricht wie Hebräisch. Regelmässig geht er auf die arabischen Märkte Jerusalems um mit den palästinensischen Marktfrauen Rezepte auszutauschen. Sein bester Freund: Ibrahim Abu Seir, Chefkonditor in einem israelischen Luxushotel. Abu Seir ist Palästinenser und kennt sich besser in der koscheren Küche aus als manch ein Jude. Der deutsch-israelische Filmemacher Uri Schneider hat die Köche für den Frieden bei ihrer Arbeit begleitet und beobachtet: auf den Märkten und am Herd, aber auch vor dem Hintergrund des Nahostkonflikts, an Militärcheckpoints und im ewig umkämpften Jerusalem. Das Ergebnis ist ein Film, der zeigt, dass viele Israelis und Palästinenser zusammenleben wollen und können, wenn sie sich darauf besinnen, was sie verbindet. Abstract: "His Excellency" was the first Soviet-Jewish film to be produced after a demand by the Central Committee's Department for Agitprop that fictional films be made "in a way that an be appreciated by millions". In the tradition of brilliant Soviet directors Eisenstein and Pudovkin, "His Excellency" features stylized cinematography and stars Leonid Leonidov, a star of the Moscow Art Theater, and in a small part, Nikolai Cherkasov, who would later play the lead roles in Eisenstein's "Alexander Nevsky" and "Ivan the Terrible". With J. Untershlak and Tamara Edelheim as Hirsh and Rivele Lekert, and the Moscow Art Theater's Leonid Leonidov as both the Tsar's governor and the community's rabbi. According to Director Roshel the subject matter of this film was so delicate that the Soviet Commissar of Enlightenment oversaw production of this film personally. The film is based on the life of Hirsch Lekert, a shoemaker and militant Jewish Labor Bund member, who attempted to assassinate the Vilna governor in 1902 to avenge the flogging of workers who participated in a May Day rally. Although the film was intended "as a tract against individualism, ... a greater emphasis is placed on class stuggle within the Jewish community." Abstract: "Jewish Luck" was among the first Soviet Yiddish films to be released in the US during the 1920s. Based on Sholem Aleichem's series of stories featuring the character Menakhem Mendl (played by the famous actor Solomon Mikhoels) the film revolves around the daydreaming entrepreneur Menakhem Mendl who specializes in doomed strike-it-rich schemes. Despite Jewish oppression by Tsarist Russia, Menakhem Mendl continues to pursue his dreams and his continued persistence transforms him from schlemiel to hero as the film uncovers the tragic underpinnings of Sholem Aleichem's comic tales. Abstract: Among the first movies to deal with the subject of the Holocaust, this documentary about Jewish war orphans opened in New York in September 1948 and has rarely been seen since. According to film critic Jim Hoberman, the film was modeled on "Children Must Laugh", a pre-war Yiddish-language picture about Jewish orphans. "We Live Again" incorporates newsreels, actual footage of children receiving aid from relief agencies, and a few staged sequences. An introductory credit reads: "This film is about the children in the Homes and Camps of France, operated under the auspices of the Jewish Union for Resistance and Mutual Aid. It was produced in the summer and fall of 1946, two years after the Liberation and is dedicated to the memory of those who died so that their children might live and laugh in peace." The film is an important companion piece to both "Our Children" and "Long is the Road", two post-war films about displaced persons restored by NCJF with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Years pass, Rachel's father dies, and the two children, knowing nothing of their fathers' pledge, meet for the first time and fall in love. But Mendel's father insists his son study at the Vilna Yeshiva, and Rachel's rich old landlord insists on marrying her. Based on the same legend as S. Ansky's classic play "The Dybbuk" this spirited film offers the divine intervention of Elijah and a happy ending. Made in 1937 on the eve of the Holocaust, "The Vow" captures authentic scenes of Jewish shtetl life, Yiddish love songs, and the clash between tradition and modernity. "The Vow" is one of several films inspired by a seminal Yiddish folktale known as the "Vilna Legend". The classic story of love, fate and mysticism was first filmed a silent movie in 1924 under the aegis of the prominent Warsaw studio owner Leo Forbert. The success of that production led Forbert to remake "The Vow" as a sound feature in 1937, reuniting many of the actors from the original film and updating the story to modern Poland. Abstract: In 1941, a group of the Soviet Union's most prominent Jewish writers and artists signed an appeal to Jews throughout the world, asking them to join the Soviet people "in the holy war against Fascism ... to destroy the enemy of humanity and of the Jewish people." The group included actor Solomon Mikhoels, poet Peretz Markish and film director Sergei Eisenstein. This newsreel footage captures their eloquent, impassioned appeals. Tragically, Mikhoels and Markish later fell victim to the Stalinist purges in the 1940s and '50s (Eisenstein died of natural causes in the 1940s.) Abstract: Asriel Stroon is a widowed landlord who has amassed a fortune in turn-of-the-century Boston. Fearful that his sins have lost him a chance to be accepted into heaven, he goes back to the "Old Country" in Poland and prays as his father's grave for the Almighty to wipe away his sins. While there, he comes across an old Jewish custom: The richest man in town is "bidding" for the awkward but brilliant student Shaya, to get him as a bridegroom for his daughter. Asriel sees that to win such a prodigy for his daughter, Flora is a sure way to secure himself a ticket to heaven. But Flora wants to marry an "American" doctor and Asriel's expensive gift to her turns out to cost more than the beleaguered father bargained for. When handsome actor Eddie Wien decides to marry, his uncle Oscar Stein warns that all women are frivolous and selfish, only on the lookout for a fat pocketbook. To prove him wrong, Eddie woos shop girl Golde Blumberg while disguised as a repulsive old millionaire "Herman Weingarten". Golde initially resists "Herman" but, forced to escape her dire financial situation, she finally accepts. A second bet is devised and the elaborate farce continues. Abstract: This is a moving documentary portrait of Israel Becker, a founder of the first professional Yiddish theatrical company in post-war Germany and writer and star of the historic film "Long is the Road", the first feature to portray the Holocaust from a Jewish point of view. "The Balcony" captures Becker at age 83, with an apartment adorned with his own paintings, many of which show family members killed during the Holocaust. These images, along with footage from "Long is the Road", reveal a man whose past is always with him. Becker replies, "I am constantly on the run. Abstract: "Bound for Nowhere: The St. Louis Episode" documents one of the Jewish community's efforts to save Jews fleeing Nazi Germany and records the indifference on the part of many nations - including the US - to their plight. The JDC produced this film to record what it thought would be a successful effort to save over 900 Jews, including 200 children, by sailing them from Nazi Germany to Cuba on the ship, the St. Louis. When Cuba refused to allow the passengers to land, the ship sailed to the Miami area where the US government also barred the refugees' entrance. The St. Louis languished in the waters around Cuba while the JDC searched for countries to accept the refugees. Finally, some European countries accepted them and the St. Louis returned to Europe to, the narrator states with unintended irony, "a new and better life." Tragically, most of these refugees ended up in countries subsequently occupied by Germany and ultimately lost their lives in the Holocaust. [jewishfilm.org]

A yeshiva student and an orphan girl who are deeply in love face eternal separation even though their parents promised them to each other before birth. Abstract: During the fall of 1942, in the Polish village of Pinczow, as the Germans deported Jews to the gas chambers, the Banya family offered to hide Israel and Frania Rubinek in their one room farmhouse. Despite enormous risk and hardship, Zofia and Ludwig Banya, along with their young son Maniek, sheltered the Rubineks for 28 months. Interweaving docu-drama sequences with archival material, this film follows Israel and Frania Rubinek on their emotional return journey to Poland, and documents their poignant reunion with Zofia Banya, the peasant woman who saved their lives forty years ago. This sophisticated version of his stage classic faithfully recreates Jewish life in turn-of-the-century Grodno, Poland. Berta Gersten gives a memorable performance as Mirele, a wealthy and pious widow whose devotion to her children extends to hand-picking a wife for her eldest son, gravely mistaking the young woman's character as giving and devout. Abstract: "The Wandering Jew" tells the story of Arthur Levi (Jacob Ben-Ami), a German-Jewish artist who experiences the new German antisemitism when his masterpiece, a portrait of his Polish-born father entitled "The Eternal Wanderer" is rejected by the Berlin Academy of Art, which also asks his resignation as professor. Later in the film the figure in the painting comes to life and tells Levi the story of the persecution of the Jewish people. The film ends with footage of an anti-Hitler rally at New York City's Madison Square Garden and Levi's resolve to bear onward in the face of adversity. "The Wandering Jew" is a unique find: the first American feature film to depict the situation of Jews in Nazi Germany, and the only Yiddish-language film of its era to address this subject. The film, which dramatizes the situation of German Jews, was an American-Jewish response to the Nazi regime. It was produced by Jewish American Film Arts at the Atlas Studio on Long Island, NY during the summer of 1933, just months after the Nazi rise to power in Germany. Abstract: "The Yidishe Gauchos" is a story of immigration and survival in the Argentine pampas. At the end of the nineteenth century, thousands of East European Jews fled from persecution and pogroms. With the help of the Jewish Colonization Association, these Jews adapted to a life on the pampas alongside the tough Argentine cowboys, the gauchos. The immigrants became ranchers and farmers; professions unknown to shtetl Jews from East Europe. Utilizing archival footage, commentary from scholars and interviews with those who remember the earliest days of Jewish settlement in Argentina, this lively documentary illuminates an unknown chapter of modern Jewish history. Abstract: A wager between God and Satan has dire consequences in this allegory based on the play by Jacob Gordin about the material world's false promises. Beware when money sounds sweeter than music, it cautions; those who win lotteries stand to lose all, including their spiritual treasures, families, communities and religion. Poor, pious Torah scribe Hershele Dubrovner has a life that glorifies God until Satan, disguised as a business partner, turns him into a greedy, dishonest factory owner whose success desecrates both his religion and his community. Betrayal and abandonment replace serenity and familiarity; the instruments of good fortune become instruments of death. Not even music, previously Hershele's joy, can heal these rifts. If the character of Hershele Dubrovner reminds some of Faust and others of Job, its no coincidence as "God, Man and Devil" combines elements of both stories. The wager at the center of the story is that for all his piety, the scribe can be corrupted - not by suffering (as in Job's case) or by the temptation of wealth (as in Faust's case), but by worldly good fortune itself. As the plot develops, Hershele amply confirms Satan's expectations, only to realize the gravity of his error after it is too later to rectify it. Abstract: "Girona: The Mother of Israel" documents Jewish daily life in Girona, a city in the northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia, from its "Golden Age" in the Middle Ages through the expulsion of Spanish Jewry in 1492 and up to the present day. Abstract: "The Living Orphan" is a dramatic tale of hardship that highlights some of the traumatic problems of the immigrant experience, including alcoholism, separation and poverty. The child star, Jerry Rosenberg (Ross) gives a memorable performance as the son Benny and the film introduces two European stars Fanina Rubina and Gustav Berger. The plot centers on the story of a stage couple that develops marital problems due to the demands of the theatre. The husband, whose career is failing, insists that the wife stay home to tend their young son. The subplot focuses on the plight of a woman who chooses her career over family obligations. Set in New York in the 1930's, the film contains some interesting street shots of the Lower East Side and a marvelous scene in the Bialystoker Old Folks Home. One of the best Second Avenue Yiddish theatre domestic melodramas produced in New York City just prior to World War II, the film provides a wonderful example of the sentimental dramas created to entertain and educate the immigrant community. Abstract: Is "Two Sisters" domestic tragedy or dark comedy? Any way that you look at it, make sure there's a tissue nearby: On her deathbed in a Bronx tenament, Mrs. Glickstein extracts a promise from her eldest daughter Betty: that she will be both sister and mother to her younger sister Sally, and to do everything to ensure her happiness. From then on Betty works tirelessly supporting her sister through nursing school, her fiancee through medical school and her father in a TB sanatarium only to have her happiness shattered when her sister and fiancee fall in love. Jennie Goldstein puts in a command performance as the "pathological arch-martyr" Betty, including a rampage through her fiancee's office declaring everything, including him, belongs to her! This family drama of personal sacrifice and devotion without end amidst the struggle to succeed in America provides a perfect vehicle for Jennie Goldstein. Abstract: This delightful comedy opens as Morris Brown, a New Yorker better acquainted with his checkbook than his prayerbook, returns to Galicia with his very American daughter, Mollie (the incomparable Molly Picon) for a family wedding. The bride, daughter of his traditionally observant brother, and Mollie, whose exuberant antics fill the film, could not be more different. But Mollie unexpectedly meets her match, an engaging young yeshiva scholar who forsakes tradition and joins the secular world to win her heart. "East and West" features classic scenes of Molly Picon lifting weights and boxing, teaching young villagers to shimmy and stealing away from services to gorge herself before sundown on Yom Kippur. Underlying these hijinks is veteran filmmaker Goldin's affectionate appreciation of differences, for good-natured comedy shapes his portrayal of worldly Jews encountering traditional shtetl life. Abstract: "Jolly Paupers" combines the rare talents of the Warsaw Art Players under the leadership of Zygmunt Turkow. In this musical comedy, the famous comic duo Dzigan and Shumacher play two small town "entrepreneurs" who believe they have struck oil in a local field. The whole town finds out and thus begins a comedy of errors, including millionaire investors, American schemers, and insane asylums (not to mention a little matchmaking on the side). Yet in the face of setbacks, these two simpletons are relentless in their efforts to escape their misery and achieve fame and fortune and refuse to give in to despair. During the last years preceding the outbreak of World War II, the Dzigan and Shumacher comedy revue theatre gained immense popularity. Abstract: This Yiddish feature film musical drama marks the screen debut of singer and cantor Moishe Oysher ("Overture to Glory" and "The Singing Blacksmith"). Shot in Pennsylvania near the Pocono Mountains, the film features Oysher in the title role of a wayward youth who makes his way from his Polish shtetl to New York's Lower East Side (the film includes rare glimpses of the Lower East Side and of 2nd Avenue Yiddish theater marquees of the period). While washing floors in a nightclub several years later he is "discovered" and becomes a well-known singer. Ultimately, Oysher's character returns home to the Old Country and reunites with his parents and his childhood sweetheart. In his book on Yiddish cinema "Bridge of Light", critic J. Hoberman calls "The Cantor's Son" an "anti-Jazz Singer," further remarking that the film's story parallels Oysher's own struggle to reconcile his cantorial calling with a career in show business. Like his film character, Oysher, born in Bessarabia the son and grandson of cantors, was both a matinee idol and a celebrated cantor. Oysher was married to his co-star Florence Weiss. After film director Sidney M. Goldin ("Uncle Moses", "East and West") suffered a fatal heart attack during the production of "The Cantor's Son", he was replaced by Stanislavsky-protege Ilya Motlyeff, who is credited as the film's director. Abstract: This 1929 documentary film contains close-ups of the leading Balkan Sephardi rabbis of the time and rare footage of Jewish schools, residential quarters, synagogues, and cemeteries as well as a sampling of Sephardi religious customs. This short unusual film was discovered by Sharon Pucker Rivo, director of NCJF, during a visit to Barcelona to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the 1492 expulsion of the Jews from Spain. "Jews of the Spanish Homeland" provides a rare glimpse of Sephardic communities in Salonika, Constantinople, Yugoslavia, and Romania as well as former centers of Jewish life in Spain. Abstract: From her apartment in New York, eighty-year-old Louise Zilkha reviews the highlights of her life that began with a traditional Jewish upbringing in Baghdad. Zilkha reminisces about her youth, of playing Queen Esther and of her arranged courtship and marriage to a leading Middle Eastern banker. She talks about the often turbulent coexistence of Iraqi Jews and Moslems, and of the persecution and threats that led the family on a journey out of Iraq to Beirut, Cairo, and finally, New York. Abstract: For his birthday Izzie Cohen wants a motorcycle, but his father gives him a camera instead. Izzie takes a photograph of his father in an apparently compromising position and uses it to blackmail him into buying a motorcycle. When the motorcycle arrives, Izzie's father gets on and starts it accidentally. He can neither control it nor turn it off and it runs wildly through the house before crashing through the house of his Irish neighbor, Murphy. Cohen and the motorcycle zip along dragging Murphy in a bathtub. The wild ride that ensues eventually catches the attention of a traffic cop. Finally the motorcycle hits a tree and the cop arrests Cohen and Murphy for reckless driving. The Izzie and Lizzie series picked up on the popularity during the twenties of Jewish comic characters such as Potash and Perlmutter, or Max Davison's Jewish characters in Hal Roach's films. Abstract: This film is a performance of one of Yosl Cutler's solo puppet shows. A multi-talented artist, writer, poet, and Yiddish Art Theater designer, Cutler is probably best known as the cartoonist for the Jewish communist newspaper, "The Freiheit". These fanciful and slightly surreal sketches preserve his work with the marionettes he designed, built and brought to life. Puppet personalities in the film include an old Jewish couple, a caricatured Rabbi and a couple of "peppery little Jews" performing traditional Jewish and Jazz dance. [jewishfilm.org]

Abstract: Elias Canetti (1905 - 1994) war einer der ganz großen Autoren des vorigen Jahrhunderts. Er begann seine Schriftstellerlaufbahn in Wien, doch die erzwungene Emigration 1938 nach England verhinderte den Erfolg. Erst 1960 wurde Canetti für den deutschen Sprachraum neu entdeckt. Es folgten Literaturpreise, darunter 1981 sogar der Nobelpreis. Seinen letzten Lebensabschnitt verbrachte der Schriftsteller in Zürich. Thomas Honickel besuchte Canettis Wohnung und sprach mit Weggefährten des Autors.

Abstract: Leo Rosen gibt sich geschäftstüchtig und erfolgreich, aber in Wirklichkeit hat er mit seinen 38 Jahren außer diversen gescheiterten Geschäftsideen noch nicht wirklich viel erreicht. Er wohnt noch immer bei seiner Mutter Rebecca und trainiert gemeinsam mit seinem Kumpel Berti eine überaus erfolglose jüdische Jungenmannschaft im Fußball. Als Leo die Straßengeigerin Mascha kennen lernt, verliebt er sich Hals über Kopf. Aber Mascha ist dabei, nach New York umzusiedeln, weil sie in Deutschland mit ihrer Musik nicht so recht weiterkommt. Leo möchte unbedingt, dass sie bleibt und nutzt eine, wie er meint, einmalige Gelegenheit: Um ihr einen Auftritt vor wichtigen kulturellen Entscheidungsträgern zu verschaffen, nimmt er Hals über Kopf den Auftrag an, für einen Empfang im Rathaus jüdische Speisen und ein musikalisches Programm zu liefern. Das Dumme ist nur, dass Leo weder Kapital noch die geringste Ahnung hat, wie man ein solches Catering organisiert. Rebecca ist entsetzt von der Vorstellung, für 300 Leute zu kochen, und Mascha will von dem Rathaus-Auftritt auch nichts wissen. Leos Plan läuft auf ein völliges Desaster zu. In der Tradition der jüdischen Komödie erzählt "Zores" augenzwinkernd von den Nöten eines Pechvogels, der zwischen erfolglosen Geschäften, einer Übermutter und zaghaftem Liebesglück hin- und hergeworfen wird. Mit liebevollem Blick erzählt Autor Daniel Wolf von einem Milieu, in dem er sich gut auskennt. Seine Idee, eine jüdische Gemeinschaft zum Hintergrund einer 'romantic comedy' zu machen, scheint ausbaufähig. Fast wünscht man sich die Fortsetzung in Form einer Sitcom, die dann hieße "Jiddisch für Anfänger". Regisseurin Anja Jacobs vertraut in ihrer Inszenierung ganz auf das Spiel ihrer glänzend geführten Charaktere.

Abstract: Onkel Moses, ein ehemals armer ostjüdischer Emigrant, betreibt ein florierendes Textilgeschäft in der Lower East Side von New York. Der in den 30er Jahren spielende Film versucht, ein authentisches Bild des Lebens ostjüdischer Einwanderer in den USA zu vermitteln, und dokumentiert den Umbruch der Traditionen zum modernen amerikanischen Lebensstil. Abstract: The seamy Jewish underworld of Odessa is the setting for Isaac Babel's story based on the life of gangster king Mishka Yaponchik ("Mike the Jap") Vinnitsky. Murder is a way of life for Benya Krik and his gang. They profit from their criminal activities until the Russian Revolution when the local commissar sets them up as a "revolutionary" regiment, complete with tattooed red stars. But this new post backfires for Benya as he finds himself ensnared in a Bolshevik trap. "Vladimir Vilner's 1927 "Benya Krik" is a long-lost evocation of Isaac Babel's Odessa, shot on location, and directed from a script written by Babel himself. Babel was 30 years old and at the peak of his popularity when he went to work for the Ukrainian studio, VUFKU. Benya Krik's first two-thirds are taken from a pair of published stories set in Odessa's prerevolutionary Jewish underworld; the last section, set in 1919, is original - albeit based on the actual demise of Benya's real-life prototype, gangster king Mishka Yaponchik ("Mike the Jap") Vinnitsky ... Abstract: Rund 3.000 Deutsche kämpften während der Zeit des Dritten Reiches in der französischen Résistance. Die meisten von ihnen waren Verfolgte der Nationalsozialisten: Kommunisten, Juden und andere Regimegegner, die aus Deutschland fliehen mussten. Patriot zu sein, hieß für sie aufseiten der Alliierten gegen die Nazis zu kämpfen. Heute leben nur noch wenige dieser "aufrechten Patrioten", wie der französische Philosoph Jean-Paul Sartre sie nannte. Zu ihnen gehören auch Peter Gingold (1916-2006) und seine Familie sowie Kurt Hälker (1922-2010) und Henriette Dreifuss. Sie erzählen von den Erlebnissen, die sie dazu bewogen haben, sich der Résistance anzuschließen und gegen die deutschen Besatzer, die immerhin ihre Landsleute waren, zu kämpfen. Sie schildern die konkreten Aktionen, die Verfolgung, die Haftbedingungen und die Folter in den Gestapo-Gefängnissen, aber auch ihre Rolle beim Aufstand zur Befreiung von Paris. Nach dem Krieg wird ihnen das Leben schwergemacht, vielen Deutschen gelten sie als Verräter. Einige sitzen wegen ihrer politischen Überzeugung auch in der Bundesrepublik wieder im Gefängnis oder erhalten als Kommunisten Berufsverbot. Ganz andere Erfahrungen macht Kurt Hälker, der nach dem Krieg in der DDR lebt und dort als Antifaschist geehrt wird. Erst in den 90er Jahren ändert sich das Bild der Résistancekämpfer in der Bundesrepublik. 2004 wird einer der Protagonisten, Peter Gingold, mit der Carl-von-Ossietzky-Medaille ausgezeichnet. Damit ehrt die Internationale Liga für Menschenrechte Personen, die sich um die Verteidigung der Menschenrechte besonders verdient gemacht haben - eine späte Würdigung für Peter Gingold und, indirekt, auch für die anderen, die mit ihm in der Résistance kämpften. Résistancekämpfern wie Peter Gingold wurde aufgrund der Rentengesetze nach wie vor ihre Dienstzeit in der Résistance nicht für die Rentenansprüche angerechnet. Ehemaligen, mittlerweile betagten SS-Angehörigen aber, beispielsweise in Lettland, überwies die Bundesrepublik Deutschland gleichzeitig regelmäßig eine kleine Pensionszahlung.

Abstract: Die Geschichte zweier Männer, deren Biographie auf tragische Weise verbunden ist. Es ist die Geschichte von Frank Reiss, dem Sohn jüdischer Eltern, der das KZ Theresienstadt überlebte, und die Geschichte von Roman Mach, dem Sohn des slowakischen Innenministers zu Hitlers Zeit, der den Tod von Franks Eltern und weiterer 70.000 Juden besiegelte. Als die beiden Jungen sich 1947 in der Schule kennenlernen, ahnen sie noch nichts von ihrer schicksalhaften Verbindung. Frank Reiss beschreibt im Film seine ungewöhnliche Freundschaft zu Roman. Roman Mach und seine Schwester haben sich nach Jahrzehnte langem Schweigen überwunden, über den Vater, den Nazitäter, Rede und Antwort zu stehen. Der Film schildert die Freundschaft anhand einer gemeinsamen Reise durch die Biographie der beiden Freunde. Im Hintergrund: Die fast völlig unbekannte Geschichte der unsäglichen Koalition zwischen dem Deutschen Reich und der Slowakei. Er begleitet die beiden Freunde auf dieser Reise nach Majdanek, dem Vernichtungslager, in dem Franks Vater an seinem 40. Geburtstag ermordet wurde. Für Roman eine Reise zu dem Ort, der für immer auch mit dem Namen seines Vaters verbunden ist.
