    Abstract: Zu seinem 50. Jubiläum macht Suhrkamp uns ein Geschenk mit der schön gedruckten und gebundenen Ausgabe der Miniaturen einer großbürgerlichen Kindheit im Kaiserreich, die inhaltlich und stilistisch zum Besten gehören, was das 20. Jahrhundert an deutscher Prosa hervorgebracht hat: keine Geschichten, keine bestimmten Personen oder Ereignisse, sondern Orte, Situationen, Momente, als blättere man in einem privaten, sehr intimen Album. Die vorliegende Ausgabe folgt der erst 1988 aufgefundenen frühesten "Gießener Fassung". Laut Nachwort des Herausgebers unterscheidet der im Winter 1932/33 kurz vor dem Beginn des Pariser Exils entstandene und hier erstmals veröffentlichte Text sich von der strengen "Einsilbigkeit" der Fassung letzter Hand 1938, die den bisherigen Ausgaben zugrunde liegt, wie ein selbstständiges, reicher auskomponiertes Gegenstück.
