Abstract: This methodologically and thematically innovative linguistic and cultural-historical study examines interpersonal social relationships during the Early New High German era. The work focuses on activities of linguistic exclusion along with the underlying pragma-grammatical and pragmasemantic strategies associated with them, as well as their impact on ten important marginal groups of the period (beggars, Jews, gypsies, and others). The study is geared to readers from all fields with an interest in history.

Abstract: Using Gertrud Kolmar's (1894-1943) complex relationship to her German-Jewish origins as a point of departure, this study explores the hidden discursive structures in her poetry. The focus is on the poem 'Garden in Summer' from her 1937 cycle of poems titled WELTEN (WORLDS). A detailed analysis of transtextual traces and their discursive interpolation reveals the poem as a kaleidoscope of scenarios of cultural, emotional, and spiritual encounter and permeation between Germanness and Jewishness within the scope of a melancholic 'endgame.' Abstract: "A thriving, yet small, liberal component in Israeli society has frequently taken issue with the constraints imposed by religious orthodoxy, largely with limited success. However, as this thoughtful new book by Guy Ben-Porat suggests, in recent years, in part because of demographic changes and in part because of the influence of an increasingly consumer-oriented society, dramatic changes have occurred in secularization of significant parts of public and private lives. Even though these fissures often have more to do with lifestyle choices and economics than with political or religious ideology, the demands and choices of a secular public and a burgeoning religious presence in the government are becoming ever more difficult to reconcile. The evidence, which the author has accrued from numerous interviews and a detailed survey, is nowhere more telling than in areas that demand religious sanction such as marriage, burial, the sale of pork, and the operation of businesses on the Sabbath. This book makes an important and timely contribution to the study of contemporary Israeli society, as new alliances are being forged in the political arena"--

Abstract: Das Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren erschließt den jüdischen Beitrag zur deutschsprachigen Kulturgeschichte in ca. 1.300 biographisch-bibliographischen Artikeln. Margarete Susman, Max Tau, Felix Aron Theilhaber, Ernst Toller, Kurt Tucholsky, Regina Ullmann, Hermann Ungar, Berthold Viertel, Jakob Wassermann, Felix Weltsch, Carl Zuckmayer und Stefan Zweig.
Abstract: The Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren describes the contribution of Jewish writers to German-language cultural history in some 13,000 biographic-bibliographic articles. The biographic section of each article includes personal information on the authors and it documents political and Zionistic involvement, the circle of friends and the attitude to Judaism. Each biography is followed by a detailed bibliography of both primary and secondary literature in which the works are critically analyzed and annotated, as far as possible or relevant. The authors described in Volume 20, which concludes the encyclopeadia, include Margarete Susman, Max Tau, Felix Aron Theilhaber, Ernst Toller, Kurt Tucholsky, Regina Ullmann, Hermann Ungar, Berthold Viertel, Jakob Wassermann, Felix Weltsch, Carl Zuckmayer and Stefan Zweig.

Abstract: The articles in this volume examine the various aspects of Judaism and facets of Jewish figures in the work of Franz Werfel. The topics covered range from Jewish assimilation through to Werfel's attempt to define the relationship between Judaism and Christianity. The compilation begins with a biographical examination of Judaism in the life of Franz Werfel and concludes with an article on film adaptations of Werfel's work; the volume as a whole gives a broader perspective on half a century of productive reception of this author, who died in exile in California

Abstract: Menasseh ben Israel (1604-1657) was one of the most important Rabbis of the Early ModernAge in Europe. He became known primarily through his leading role in negotiating the readmission of the Jews to England. The England negotiations, however, were only the final chapter of a life-long program, which is fully examined in detail for the first time in this work. Menasseh is introduced as a Jewish scholar, who - despite all the success he achieved in the Christian world - also failed because his path between mediation and self-realization was understood only by a very few. Abstract: "There can be little doubt that without Spinoza, German Idealism would have been just as impossible as it would have been without Kant. Yet the precise nature of Spinoza's influence on the German Idealists has hardly been studied in detail. This volume of essays by leading scholars sheds light on how the appropriation of Spinoza by Fichte, Schelling and Hegel grew out of the reception of his philosophy by, among others, Lessing, Mendelssohn, Jacobi, Herder, Goethe, Schleiermacher, Maimon and, of course, Kant. The volume thus not only illuminates the history of Spinoza's thought, but also initiates a genuine philosophical dialogue between the ideas of Spinoza and those of the German Idealists. The issues at stake - the value of humanity; the possibility and importance of self-negation; the nature and value of reason and imagination; human freedom; teleology; intuitive knowledge; the nature of God - remain of the highest philosophical importance today"--

Abstract: Holocaust Denial. The Politics of Perfidy provides a graphic and compelling global panorama of past and present variations on this toxic phenomenon. The volume examines right and left wing French negationism, post-Communist Holocaust deniers in Eastern-Europe, the spread of denial to Australia, Canada, South-Africa and even to Japan. Leading scholarly experts also explore the close connection between Holocaust denial, global conspiracy theories, antisemitism and radical anti-Zionism - especially in Iran and the Arab world. Abstract: After all that has happened, German Studies in Israel is not at all self-evident, but represents a challenge in several respects. Who is challenged and what does the challenge consist of? In Israel the German language as medium and subject of German Studies was long considered taboo. A primary aim of German Studies is to prevent the cultural heritage of German Jewry from falling into oblivion in Israel, but rather to preserve it and - wherever possible - to enable it to thrive again. How can German Studies assert itself in the face of the worldwide streamlining of the university system in this field, which is also taking place in Israel? Who benefits from having German Studies in Israel? Finally, what scientific, political and cultural purposes can, should and does it want to serve?Hanni Mittelmann,Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel; Christian Kohlroß,Universität Mannheim.

Abstract: "The dilemma of how best to protect human rights is one of the most persistent problems facing the international community today. This unique and wide-ranging history of humanitarian intervention examines responses to oppression, persecution and mass atrocities from the emergence of the international state system and international law in the late sixteenth century, to the end of the twentieth century. Leading scholars show how opposition to tyranny and to religious persecution evolved from notions of the common interests of 'Christendom' to ultimately incorporate all people under the concept of 'human rights'. As well as examining specific episodes of intervention, the authors consider how these have been perceived and justified over time, and offer important new insights into ideas of national sovereignty, international relations and law, as well as political thought and the development of current theories of 'international community'"--

Abstract: "This book traces the history of early seventeenth-century Portuguese Sephardic traders who settled in two communities on Senegal's Petite Côte. There, they lived as public Jews, under the spiritual guidance of a rabbi sent to them by the newly established Portuguese Jewish community in Amsterdam. In Senegal, the Jews were protected from agents of the Inquisition by local Muslim rulers. The Petite Côte communities included several Jews of mixed Portuguese-African heritage as well as African wives, offspring, and servants. The blade weapons trade was an important part of their commercial activities. These merchants participated marginally in the slave trade but fully in the arms trade, illegally supplying West African markets with swords. This blade weapons trade depended on artisans and merchants based in Morocco, Lisbon, and northern Europe and affected warfare in the Sahel and along the Upper Guinea Coast. After members of these communities moved to the United Provinces around 1620, they had a profound influence on relations between black and white Jews in Amsterdam. The study not only discovers previously unknown Jewish communities but by doing so offers a reinterpretation of the dynamics and processes of identity construction throughout the Atlantic world"--

Abstract: "Evan Burr Bukey explores the experience of intermarried couples - marriages with Jewish and non-Jewish partners - and their children in Vienna after Germany's seizure of Austria in 1938. These families coped with changing regulations that disrupted family life, pitted relatives against each other, and raised profound questions about religious, ethnic, and national identity. Bukey finds that although intermarried couples lived in a state of fear and anxiety, many managed to mitigate, delay, or even escape Nazi sanctions. Drawing on extensive archival research, his study reveals how hundreds of them pursued ingenious strategies to preserve their assets, to improve their "racial" status, and above all to safeguard the position of their children. It also analyzes cases of intermarried partners who chose divorce as well as persons involved in illicit liaisons with non-Jews. Jews and Intermarriage in Nazi Austria concludes that although most of Vienna's intermarried Jews survived the Holocaust, several hundred Jewish partners were deported to their deaths and children of such couples were frequently subjected to Gestapo harassment"--

Abstract: "This book is the first comprehensive intellectual biography of Max Horkheimer during the early and middle phases of his life (1895-1941). Drawing on unexamined new sources, John Abromeit describes the critical details of Horkheimer's intellectual development. This study recovers and reconstructs the model of early Critical Theory that guided the work of the Institute for Social Research in the 1930s. Horkheimer is remembered primarily as the co-author of Dialectic of Enlightenment, which he wrote with Theodor W. Adorno in the early 1940s. But few people realize that Horkheimer and Adorno did not begin working together seriously until the late 1930s or that the model of Critical Theory developed by Horkheimer and Erich Fromm in the late 1920s and early 1930s differs in crucial ways from Dialectic of Enlightenment. Abromeit highlights the ways in which Horkheimer's early Critical Theory remains relevant to contemporary theoretical discussions in a wide variety of fields"--

Abstract: This study investigates the function of the radio play asmedium of cultural memory, based on the memories of the holocaust found in the radio plays of the GDR. In comparison to the presentation of the holocaust in other media, which has already been explored various times, here for the first time the focus is on the specific aesthetic means of the radio play and the role of radio as political instrument of power in the FRG-GDR conflict. Extracts from the analyzed radio plays are included in the enclosed audio CD.
Abstract: Review text: "This is an important book – and not just because it challenges received wisdoms about Holocaust memory in the GDR, at least as far as the treatment of the theme in GDR radio plays is concerned. Its other key value is its awareness of the need to differentiate between cultural modes of reception."Bill Niven in: http://hsozkult.geschichte.hu-berlin.de/rezensionen/id=14901

Abstract: This study undertakes a fundamental (new) evaluation of the intercultural relationship of Jews and Christians between 1150 and 1500. Fragments of the transfer of Jewish motifs and materials into the Christian literature of the German Middle Ages are shown, thus rounding out our picture of medieval German literature in this important aspect. The study makes a further contribution to understanding the relationship of Jews and Christians in all of the German-speaking areas during the German Middle Ages.

Abstract: "Relations between Christians and Jews over the past two thousand years have been characterised to a great extent by mutual distrust and by Christian discrimination and violence against Jews. In recent decades, however, a new spirit of dialogue has been emerging, beginning with an awakening among Christians of the Jewish origins of Christianity, and encouraging scholars of both traditions to work together. An Introduction to Jewish-Christian relations sheds fresh light on this ongoing interfaith encounter, exploring key writings and themes in Jewish-Christian history, from the Jewish context of the New Testament to major events of modern times, including the rise of ecumenism, the horrors of the Holocaust, and the creation of the state of Israel. This accessible theological and historical study also touches on numerous related areas such as Jewish and interfaith studies, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, international relations and the political sciences"--Provided by publisher.
