Abstract: Is research on antisemitism even necessary in countries with a relatively small Jewish population? Absolutely, as this volume shows. Compared to other countries, research on antisemitism in the Nordic countries (Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) is marginalized at an institutional and staffing level, especially as far as antisemitism beyond German fascism, the Second World War, and the Holocaust is concerned. Furthermore, compared to scholarship on other prejudices and minority groups, issues concerning Jews and anti-Jewish stereotypes remain relatively underresearched in Scandinavia - even though antisemitic stereotypes have been present and flourishing in the North ever since the arrival of Christianity, and long before the arrival of the first Jewish communities. This volume aims to help bring the study of antisemitism to the fore, from the medieval period to the present day. Contributors from all the Nordic countries describe the status of as well as the challenges and desiderata for the study of antisemitism in their respective countries

Abstract: This book consists of a range of essays covering the complex crises, tensions and dilemmas but also the positive potential in the meeting of Jews with Western culture. In numerous contexts and through the work of fascinating individuals and thinkers, the work examines some of the consequences of political, cultural and personal rupture, as well as the manifold ways in which various Jewish intellectuals, politicians (and occasionally spies!) sought to respond to these ruptures and carve out new, sometimes profound, sometimes fanciful, options of thought and action. It also delves critically into the attacks on liberal and Enlightenment humanism. In almost all the essays the fragility of things is palpably present and the book touches on some of the ironies, problematics and functions of responses to that condition. The work mirrors the author's ongoing fascination with the always fraught, fragile and creatively fecund confrontation of Jews (and others) with European modernity, its history, politics, culture and self-definition. In a time of increasing anxiety and feelings of fragility, this work may be helpful in understanding how people at an earlier (and sometimes contemporary) period sought to come to terms with a similar predicament.

Abstract: Main description: Black Jews in Africa and the Americas tells the fascinating story of how the Ashanti, Tutsi, Igbo, Zulu, Beta Israel, Maasai, and many other African peoples came to think of themselves as descendants of the ancient tribes of Israel. Pursuing medieval and modern European race narratives over a millennium in which not only were Jews cast as black but black Africans were cast as Jews, Tudor Parfitt reveals a complex history of the interaction between religious and racial labels and their political uses. For centuries, colonialists, travelers, and missionaries, in an attempt to explain and understand the strange people they encountered on the colonial frontier, labeled an astonishing array of African tribes, languages, and cultures as Hebrew, Jewish, or Israelite. Africans themselves came to adopt these identities as their own, invoking their shared histories of oppression, imagined blood-lines, and common traditional practices as proof of a racial relationship to Jews. Beginning in the post-slavery era, contacts between black Jews in America and their counterparts in Africa created powerful and ever-growing networks of black Jews who struggled against racism and colonialism. A community whose claims are denied by many, black Jews have developed a strong sense of who they are as a unique people. In Parfitt’s telling, forces of prejudice and the desire for new racial, redemptive identities converge, illuminating Jewish and black history alike in novel and unexplored ways.

Abstract: This study analyses the German-Jewish symbiosis as a historical phenomenon that made a significant contribution to Germany's cultural flowering in connection with the emergence of an educated middle-class (Bildungsbürgertum) around 1800. It began when German culture had to be 'invented' in order to free itself from the supremacy of French culture. In political, cultural, and linguistic terms Germany had nothing that could truly be called 'national', and precisely the same applied to the Jews as well. The educated middle-classes were kept remote from political life by the German Sonderweg and did not engage with anti-Jewish tendencies. The study discusses the development of this symbiosis up to its dissolution in a European framework, on the one hand, and as a result of Zionism on the other.

Abstract: This volume contains an edition of three important historical narratives by Salomon Kohn (1825-1904), a comprehensive bibliography and a thorough study, in which Kohn's work is located in the context of German-Jewish literary and cultural history of the 19th century. The volume thus represents the first ever scholarly engagement with an author who must be regarded as the founder of German-Jewish historical fiction and who belonged to the most popular writers of his time.

Abstract: Selected responsa of Rabbi Meir of Rothenburg (ca. 1200-1293), which deal with pressing legal issues of his time, are translated and examined. His decisions are evaluated in their historical context. The study delineates the framework of the argumentation in these advisory opinions and makes the complicated structure of the texts accessible. Comparisons with the legal situation of the surrounding culture show differences and similarities and offer insights into everyday Jewish life.
