Abstract: Elijah the Prophet is a remarkably impressive figure whose life is full of dramatic moments: the decree to stop the rain, the fierce tension with King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, the war on idolatry which had its climax on Mount Carmel with the killing of the prophets of Baal, God’s revelation at Horeb, the ascent to heaven in a chariot of fire, etc. These episodes sparked the imagination of readers and commentators, thinkers and artists, who continued to study the figure of Elijah throughout the generations. The book Until Elijah Comes: The Portrayal of Elijah the Prophet in Tannaitic Literature is an examination of Elijah’s multi-faceted character as reflected in Tannaitic sources, the earliest stratum of rabbinic literature. Adiel Kadari presents an in-depth analysis of the major issues related to Elijah the Prophet in the intellectual world of the sages, such as the principles and limits of halakhic discourse, messianism and eschatology, religious and political zealotry, the phenomenon of prophecy and the question of its persistence in the post-biblical era, and the relationship to history, religious piety and asceticism. The analysis of Elijah in this volume is rooted in philological studies concerning the origin and transmission of the text, and branches out to an examination of ideological aspects and worldviews. The synthesis of various approaches employed in the study of rabbinic literature yields a rich and variegated discourse. The book’s various chapters reveal the tremendous importance of Elijah in the eyes of the sages, as well as the exegetical and ideological struggles over the shaping of his image

Abstract: Rabbi Judah Leib Alter of Ger, a famed nineteenth-century Hasidic master, wrote an influential collection of Hebrew homilies. But it seems that R. Judah Leib's sermons were also transcribed by his students, some of whom recorded their teacher's words in the original Yiddish rather than Hebrew translation. This monograph is based on a newly-discovered Yiddish manuscript of sixty pages. It presents a synoptic edition of the Yiddish text alongside the Hebrew version, thus enabling comparison of the witnesses and demonstrating the development of the various texts. The introduction uses this manuscript to explore broader historical and theoretical issues such as the relationship between written texts and oral culture, the development of written Yiddish, the nature and boundaries of translation, and the complex pathways of transmission from teachers to their students

Abstract: Many books have been written about the Baal Shem Tov; his extensive work and influence have drawn the attention of prominent researchers in the past and present. Tsippi Kauffman has a fresh outlook: she does not attempt to reconstruct the historical Baal Shem Tov, but rather to trace reflections of traditions pertaining to his in essays and writings related to Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav, his famous great-grandchild. Rabbi Nahman saw himself not only as a preserver, but also as someone who continued and developed the tradition of the Baal Shem Tov, within struggles in new and different fronts. One of these new fronts was the inner sphere; the dilemmas of self-awareness. The tension between Rabbi Nachman's desire to imitate the Baal Shem Tov, his sense of guilt for not being worthy, and the effort to find a solution for the conflicted psychological state, are ways in which the Baal Shem Tov's figure and traditions shaped his great-grandchild, but also in which the latter shaped the figure of the former in the eyes of generations to come

Abstract: Rabbi Moses ben Nahman (c. 1194-1267), rabbi, commentator, Kabbalist, and public leader, was one of the most prominent and influential Jewish figures in the Middle Ages. His diverse works reflect the history of Jewish communities in Western Europe in the thirteenth century and particularly the story of his own life. This book seeks to illuminate Nahmanides' works and beliefs, on the background of the challenges during his life. How was his thought formed, and what were its sources? In what stage of his life was he acquainted with the Kabbalah? To what extent was his immigration to Eretz Israel the consequence of Barcelona disputation? This book offers a new - historical-biographical - perspective for understanding Nahmanides' religious and intellectual world

Abstract: This extraordinary commentary by an anonymous late twelfth-century northern French exegete interprets the Song of Songs solely according to its plain meaning as a story of two young lovers and their developing relationship. The exegete pays attention to every detail of the text, offering many enlightening insights into its meaning, all the while expanding upon the 'way of lovers' - the ways that young people in love go about their lovemaking. The French background of the exegete is made clear by many references to knights, coats of arms, weapons, chivalry, and of course, wine drinking, as well as numerous glosses in Old French. The edition is accompanied by an extensive introduction which analyzes the various exegetical, literary, and linguistic features of the text

Abstract: The Hebrew Bible is the cornerstone of Judaism and Jewish culture; as such, it also provides the foundation for the other two monotheistic religions, Christianity and Islam. It is a book that embodied numerous revolutions, the most prominent of which was the Monotheistic Revolution, the replacement of polytheism with the belief in one all-powerful God who both created the world and governs it. Among the other revolutionary ideas that are put forward by the Bible we find the establishment of the Sabbath, the granting of one city — Jerusalem — a monopoly over holiness, the opposition to human kingship, and the moral dimensions of prophecy, to name just a few. Over the centuries and millennia, these revolutionary ideas have continued to attract and inspire readers, believers, interpreters and artists

Abstract: Journeys of the Soul: Concepts and Imageries of Paradise in Medieval Kabbalah covers the most decisive period in the history of Jewish speculation about the Garden of Eden. At the heart of the book is a thorough analysis of the compositions written by medieval kabbalists and other esotericists dedicated to that ultimate locus of retribution. Alongside their concrete and abstract portraits of the Garden, these works discuss its relationship to the Godhead and the role it plays in personal eschatology, anthropology, and psychology. The book examines trends within the interpretive history of the biblical Paradise in medieval Jewish thought more generally, and in medieval kabbalistic literature in particular. The notion of gradations or distinct sites within the Garden of Eden is explored in light of its possible influences, and the appearance of the Garden of Eden within kabbalistic psychology is considered in light of thirteenth-century theosophical doctrines. A lengthy treatment is devoted to those works which delineate the architectonic structure of the supernal Garden and depict the visual appearance of the earthly temples (hekhalot) of the lower Garden, while mapping them onto the structurally complex interrelationships within the Godhead. Within this context, the book treats a number of textual conundrums concerning the very development of the kabbalistic canon, including the appearance of the Zohar. Throughout the book, the author also investigates scientific paradigms, legendary traditions, and theological polemics in the religious literature of the period concerning the appearance and structure of the Garden of Eden. Similar exegeses, shared traditions, and a common conceptual foundation of the eschatological Paradise are identified in the kabbalistic literature, alongside echos of the Jewish apocrypha, Rabbinic literature, and Hekhalot texts. Dr. Avishai Bar Asher has been awarded the Matanel Prize for the best book in Jewish Thought published during the years 2018-2019

Abstract: The philosophy of Levinas has developed over nearly sixty years. Its evolution can be subdivided into three main stages: Following the pre-war writings, the period 1945-1961 lead to the book Totalité et Infini, in which the ethical thought of Levinas takes a first accomplished form. During the last stage, whose central opus is Autrement qu'être (Otherwise than Being), his thought both radicalized and opened up to multiple horizons. Indeed, Levinas is not merely an academic philosopher ignorant of other movements of thought that mark his century. This book aims to show how the stages of Levinas's strictly philosophical thought is expressed with regard to politics, Judaism, and Christianity

Abstract: The Quran is the holy scripture of a religion that has changed the world. It contains the speech of God unto Muhammad the prophet, and through him unto his entire generation -- Idolatrous Arabs, Jews and Christians. This book delineates the major issues which are discovered as one reads through the Quran: How God was revealed to the prophet; in what manner he speaks to him; how he guides the prophet to enlarge the community of believers and face his opponents; how he defines the community of believers; what are the moral and ethical codes which he lays down for them; what is the image of God; what is the religion of Islam which God calls the people to follow; what are the practical ways for expressing the belief in the unity of God; the Abrahamic faith to which one must adhere so as to become a true Muslim. The present book also reviews God's polemics with Jews, Christians and idolaters; the status of the scriptures of the Jews and the Christians; the conditions of war and peace with the unbelievers at large; the descriptions of the resurrection and the day of judgment, as well the colorful descriptions of paradise and hell

Aristotelian and Neoplatonic paradigms in the Jewish world confronted the kalam paradigm at their early stage, and magic and experimental science in the following stage

Abstract: Given the availability of literal commentaries to the Bible, including those of Rashi, R. Joseph Kara, Samuel Ben Meir (Rashbam), R. Abraham Ibn Ezra and others, one of the key questions that vexed R. Joseph Bekhor Shor and his contemporaries was whether there was a need for yet another additional Bible commentary. The argument put forward here suggests that R. Joseph Bekhor Shor chose a path that combined continuity and innovation. The fluid movement between the familiar and the novel is the main contribution of R. Joseph Bekhor Shor's exegesis. While remaining committed to the traditional approach to interpretation, R. Joseph Bekhor Shor succeeded in paving new pathways and introducing original methods that had not previously been developed by his predecessors. This book serves as a vital tool for researchers of the Bible commentaries of Northern France, for those who study the teachings of R. Joseph Bekhor Shor and for all who enjoy studying the Bible and its commentaries

Abstract: Mesopotamian and biblical societies in antiquity were characterized by their patriarchal structure. The father was head of the family unit, and his rule extended over many areas of life. He had broad legal authority over the members of his household, including his offspring. It is therefore expected that in the ancient sources a dominant father figure would be mentioned alone or almost alone. And yet, in Mesopotamian and biblical texts, particularly legal writings, the exclusivity of the father is not always explicit. In many of the Mesopotamian and biblical writings, especially legal texts, the mother is mentioned in various contexts and in a range of realms, mainly those pertaining to her offspring. This intriguing phenomenon raised the question whether the mother in the ancient Near East and ancient Israel had legal authority in the household. The book The Legal Status of the Mother in the Ancient Near East and the Bible sheds light on the world of the ancient mothers and their status within the households and the societies in which they lived. This study demonstrates that the mother acted by virtue of the legal status she possessed in matters related to her sons and daughters' marriages and their behavior towards her. This book is for those walking in the fields of Mesopotamian and biblical research, and for readers interested in the universal subject in question - the relations between the mother and her offspring

Abstract: The Book of Micah is composed of prophecies by Micah, a contemporary of Isaiah. Micah flourished ca. 733-712 BCE, or even a little later, but before the invasion of the mighty Assyrian army of Sennacherib to Judah. Not all the prophecies of Micah have been preserved, and not all the prophecies included in the Book of Micah had been penned, or delivered by Micah. In his detailed introduction and the commentary to the Book of Micah, the author deals with the complicated problems pertaining to the book, its literary units, and their oral and written history. The author of the commentary is Professor (emeritus) Yair Hoffman, from the department of Bible in Tel Aviv University, who authored also the commentary on the Book of Jeremiah (2001; 2 volumes), in the Mikra Leyisra'el series. He is the author and editor of numerous volumes and papers in Hebrew and English. He served as the head of the School of Jewish Studies of Tel Aviv University. Professor Hoffman's commentary on the Book of Micah is a must for any Bible student. This commentary on the Book of Micah is part of Mikra Leyisra'el, an ongoing series of scientific Hebrew commentaries to the Bible composed by renowned scholars from universities in Israel and abroad. The commentaries are written according to the most recent achievements of biblical scholarship, and relevant studies in Semitic linguistics, Ancient Near Eastern studies, and archaeology, with special attention to the contribution of the medieval Jewish commentators and grammarians. The Mikra Leyisra'el series boasts the commentaries on the books of Deuteronomy (2 volumes); Joshua; Judges; Samuel (2 volumes); Isaiah 40-66 (2 volumes); Jeremiah (2 volumes); Ezekiel (2 volumes); Joel and Amos; Obadiah and Jonah; Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah; Proverbs (2 volumes); Song of Songs; Ruth; and Esther. The commentary on Lamentations is now in its final production stage and the books of Kings (2 volumes); Ezra-Nehemiah; Haggai; Malachi; and Daniel are now in advanced stages of editing. More volumes are in various stages of preparation

Abstract: Free choice has been one of the main philosophical issues throughout the ages. The Essence of Choice in Medieval Jewish Philosophy offers a comprehensive analysis of the views of medieval Jewish philosophers on this topic. It presents various perspectives on the problem of free choice in philosophy in general and in Jewish philosophy in particular: Does free choice really exist, or is it an illusion? What is the attitude of the medieval philosophers toward what the Bible and the Sages have to say about free choice? Does Judaism have a substantive position on philosophical questions? What power can free a person from causal determinism? The book discusses at length the opinions of twenty-one philosophers, from Al- Muqammis in the ninth century to Rabbi Joseph Albo in the fifteenth. This engagement with many philosophers demonstrates the richness of Jewish philosophy and the multiplicity of opinions in it, as well as how historical changes, such as the transition from Arabic to Hebrew, affect philosophical thought. On the basis of his historical analysis, the author argues that there is no fundamental Jewish position on the question of free choice and that one can find support in the religious texts for every philosophical view

Abstract: The Halakha is not just a body of literature; it is also a cultural event. It follows then that the philosophy of Halakha must address the happening of the Halakha. Surprisingly, till now philosophers of Halakha have not addressed this dimension of the event or the happening of the Halakha. The articles in this book are an attempt at facing this challenge. But this is not simple because herein lies a paradox. If the event or the happening is something that lies outside the confines of what is captured in the written word, the effort to write about it is one that must take us on a fascinating journey between what is possible and what perhaps is not. What is the nature of the Halakha as an event? What is the knowledge contained in this dimension of the Halakha that defies conceptualization in the written word? How does the insight that the Halakha is principally an event dramatically affect the philosophy of the Halakha? As we have said, philosophers of the Halakha have not addressed this question before and the authors in this collection - scholars and researchers from a wide range of fields - are all facing it for the first time bringing to it a wide range of tools from fields as varied as philosophy, Jewish thought, performance, cinema, group dynamics, cognition, gender studies and more. Together they offer us a new discourse and framework for conceptualizing the philosophy of the Halakha

Abstract: Jewish thought and rhetoric may have dominated the Jewish people's way of life for years, but what happens when a Jewish state is established, whose laws and authorities are not necessarily based on that same Jewish tradition? Jewish-Israeli Political Thought is a collection of studies exploring the tension between Israeli and Jewish political philosophy, the relationship between the Jewish people's collective and personal past and present, individual identity and its place in the traditional Jewish collectiveness, and the intermediary role of the ancient Hebrew language in the dialogue between the past and the present. The chapters in this book were written by young scholars of different religious, and sometimes cultural and lingual backgrounds; however, they all live in modern-day Israel, and they all question the relation between traditional-Jewish and modern-Israeli political thought. The diversity of the writers enables a broad and unique perspective on the status of Jewish tradition in contemporary political thought in Israel. The book provides a window into various spatial and temporal horizons in the course of a Jewish tradition that is constantly being re-examined and re-discovered

Abstract: When were the books of the "Former Prophets" written? Who wrote them? Who are the editors that made these books the most important source; describing the continuous history of the Jewish People in their land, from the time of the conquest of the Land of Canaan through the destruction of the Holy Temple and the Babylonian exile? These questions are at the center of this book. The name of the book, "From Settlement to Exile" reflects the sequence of events described in the books of the Former Prophets. The book discusses whether a failure could have been predicted from the events described, or whether there were also successful and tranquil periods prior to the destruction that brought hope to the hearts of the people and realistic expectations of establishing a lasting kingdom. Although the impression is that the Former Prophets describe a continuous history that leads inevitably to destruction, research proves that the Former Prophets were written by a number of authors during successful periods as well as difficult ones. The text actually includes several chapters or individual verses that were added after the destruction in order to find an explanation for the disastrous destruction event

Abstract: The book Human Choice: Biblical Narrative and the Drama of Choice suggests, in contrast to the dominant position in the field of theology, that humanity and not God stands at the heart of biblical narrative. Underpinning many biblical narratives is a theology that may be termed a “theology of choice”, a theology predicated on the belief that human's central task is to choose between good and evil. Theology of choice leads to biblical narratives' focus on the internal conflicts of characters, their struggles and the choices that they must make. The principle that a person's choices determine one's destiny lies at the foundation of biblical narrative and is one of the basic tenets of Israelite belief. In contrast to the belief in a predetermined destiny characteristic of idolatrous culture as evident in many ancient mythologies as well as Greek tragedy, the outlook underlying many biblical narratives is that a person is a free being and is responsible for one's actions and one's ultimate destiny. The book also argues against the belief that the books of the Bible reflect polarized thinking and a dichotomous worldview. A sophisticated literary analysis treating the different levels of the narrative - the syntagmatic, paradigmatic and dramatic - with a focus on the use of tripartite contrast - a literary device yet to be noticed in biblical research - reveals that the biblical perspectives are not polar in nature, but rather include complexity and a gray zone lying between the dichotomy of black and white. The doubts and wavering of middle-ground characters such as Lot, Saul and Ahab create a drama about choice and infuse the narratives with complexity and interest. Middle-ground characters in biblical narratives represent human complexity, characterized by internal conflict and struggles, and the need to decide between conflicting desires, values and beliefs. This tension creates the biblical drama of choice which focuses on human choice

Abstract: “For my dear grandson, David, this book in which he will not always recognize - and not incorrectly - the God of his fathers”: Levinas' dedication encapsulates the issues he addresses in the thirteenth essays collected in De Dieu qui vient à l'idée (Of God who comes to mind). In contrast with a whole tradition of Jewish and Christian philosophy (Juda Halevi, Blaise Pascal), Levinas' God is nor “The God of the philosophers”, neither “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”. “God” is not an object of thought or of faith, He cannot be approached nor by rational knowledge, neither through dialogue, or religious and mystical experience. Basing himself on Husserl's phenomenology as well as on Talmudic tradition and on the writings of Rabbi Haim Voloziner, Levinas focuses on the ethical meaning encapsulated in the word “God”. Despite his quasi absence, “God” - or the absolute transcendence signified by this word - is never indifferent to the “here below”, he is never detached from “terrestrial existence and from human society”, from the place where infinite responsibility for the other is incumbent on me. In addition to his insights on “God”, Levinas deals with issues such as politics, religion and language, the Marxist concept of ideology, death, hermeneutics, the concept of evil, the philosophy of dialogue. He addresses the thought of Husserl, Heidegger, Rosenzweig, Buber, Bergson, Kierkegaard, Marx, Ernst Bloch, and Derrida

Abstract: This study is devoted to three interrelated subjects: We seek to understand the theory of Jewish criminal punishment, we shall endeavor to describe the role of pain and suffering in punishment, and we wish to present an encyclopedic view of Jewish penology, the history of criminal punishment among the Jews throughout history. We intend to point out that there was more than one system of Jewish penology. We will elaborate upon the existence of a classical system - retributory and expatiatory - related to a self-perfecting society. Only such a society would ordain a painless penalty for death for criminals guilty of the most serious crimes with malice and forethought and a painful punishment with immediate restoration to one's community for criminals guilty of lesser crimes. Criminal penalties for the purposes of deterrence (private or public) or of social rehabilitation are minor considerations. In addition to and alongside the classical penological system, we will be detailing other systems of a more practical nature: one governed by the King's law and others emerging from rabbinical ad hoc jurisdiction and communal legislation. These systems are less governed by the classical motivations of strict retribution and religious expiation (which continue to play a role - albeit a relatively minor one); deterrence and social rehabilitation, law and order, are their dominant considerations. Moreover the varying degrees of judicial autonomy granted to the Jewish community by the non-Jewish governments resulted invariations in penal practices among the various communities themselves. A summery in English at the end of the book

Abstract: The relationship between the traditional Jewish past and the present is a key question in Jewish intellectual thought from the Wissenschaft des Judentums in the nineteenth century up to the present day. The Angel of Jewish History casts a philosophical gaze upon the relationship between the traditional Jewish past and the present through the metaphysical worldviews of five formative Jewish Studies scholars: Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi, Amos Funkenstein, Gershom Scholem, Baruch Kurzweil, and Nathan Rotenstreich. Their hermeneutic worldviews and writings deal with the nature and formation of modern Judaism, Wissenschaft des Judentums and historicism, the image of the Jewish past and tradition, secularization, and God's status in present-day Jewish reality. These issues are explored in the book against the background of the tense discourse between the perception of modern Jewish reality as a break from the past and tradition and the argument for continuity despite the changes and developments of modernity. The book was originally published in English

Abstract: The book 'Temple Portals: Studies in Aggadah and Midrash in the Zohar' deals with the Zohar, the most important book of Kabbalah, and discuss it as a latest strata of the Midrashic literature. The book concentrates on the 'expanded' biblical story in the Zohar, and especially on the relationship between it and the ancient Talmudic Aggadah. The book examines the Zohar as a collection of many late and developed versions of the ancient Talmudic stories. Each of its chapters discusses one of the biblical tale traditions in the Zohar. Among other things discussed here issues such as: the sin of Adam, the binding of Isaac, Esau's character, the status of Elijah, and others. By analytical and critical examination of each of these traditions, the composition reveals - the first time systematically - Aspects of continuity and change in the history of the old Aggadic story and its way into the Zoharic corpus. Moreover, the detailed description of this literary process also reveals the world of the authors of the Zohar, their spiritual distresses, mystical orientations , and self-consciousness. Some chapters of this book has been published during the past years, and to these chapters were added several new topics, as well as conceptual and methodological introduction to the Midrash and Aggadah in the Zohar

Abstract: And before Honor - Humility investigates the moral-spiritual ideal of humility in rabbinic literature, a topic which has until now not been the subject of critical inquiry. Four sugyot (topics of discussion) stand at the center of the inquiry: haughtiness of spirit and lowliness of spirit, the humility of the Holy One blessed is He, humility and irascibility, and the ineluctable tension between the honor of Torah and human dignity. Shmuel Lewis presents a theoretical framework and interpretive approach that fit the unique nature of rabbinic literature and uncover a philosophical layer of thought in texts that have been considered until now merely didactic. His readings tack between close textual investigation and broad conceptual analysis in search of the mutual relations between social conceptions and world pictures. By means of comparison with parallel mutual relations in ancient Greek thought the connections between social conceptions, world pictures and moral ideals comes into view in both moral languages - the biblical-rabbinic and the Greek. The cosmological aspect is approached in the context of the biblical world picture as developed by the Sages in contrast to the Greek kosmos, the social aspect in the context of the beit midrash of the Sages and their relations with people outside their own enclave. The study makes frequent use of anthropological research and applies philosophical methods of social science. This multifaceted approach allows for an overarching view that uncovers surprising meanings in the sources and presents them with a conceptual depth that invites dialogue with parallel discussions in western philosophical discourse

Abstract: This study examines the Pentateuchal account of Israel's preparations for entering Canaan, appearing within the concluding section of the Book of Numbers. Literary-critical analysis reveals that each of the passages that comprise this account is the product of several stages of composition, with each literary stratum reflecting the ideological tendencies of the authors responsible for its creation. It emerges that ideological disputes that raged in Judea of the Persian period, when these texts were composed, manifested themselves in historiographical accounts describing a much earlier time - that just prior to the entry into Canaan. The wilderness period, seen as decisive for Israel's past, and the notion of the Mosaic Torah believed to have been given during this formative era, along with the obvious parallel to these Judean authors' own days, those of the return from exile, led them to depict the events at the end of Moses' time in ways that addressed the burning questions of Yehud of the Persian period. The textual and historical analysis reveals that a previously unrecognized substratum, running throughout the account, has been augmented by several editorial additions. This recognition in turn sheds new light on the Pentateuch's formation and on the historical circumstances reflected in its composition.

Abstract: Distinguished philosopher Hilary Putnam, who is also a practicing Jew, questions the thought of three major Jewish philosophers of the twentieth century - Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Buber, and Emmanuel Levinas - to help him reconcile the philosophical and religious sides of his life. An additional presence in the book is Wittgenstein, who, although not a practicing Jew, thought about religion in ways that Putnam juxtaposes to the views of Rosenzweig, Buber and Levinas. Putnam explains the leading ideas of each of these great thinkers, bringing out what, in his opinion, constitutes the decisive intellectual and spiritual contributions of each of them. Although the religion discussed is Judaism, the depth and originality of these philosophers, as incisively interpreted by Putnam, make their thought nothing less than a guide to life. Abstract: Halakhah: Overt and Implicit Conceptual and Ideological Contexts, is a collection of articles by leading scholars in the field of halakhah and the philosophy of halakhah. The articles uncover the overt and implicit worldviews of a number of halakhic decisors and examine how they coped with extra-halakhic cultures and ideas. Some of them internalized “outside” concepts, while others dealt with the outside world by making new use of the internal notions of the world of halakhah. The articles also consider the link between ideology and the issuance of halakhic rulings. Readers will encounter examples of the influence of ideology on halakhah, alongside arguments that categorically deny that ideology plays any part in halakhic thinking. The volume proposes answers to questions such as whether halakhah derives its power from its anti-ideological character and what underlies the assertion that halakhah is an ideological text

Abstract: This research hopes to construct fascinating mosaic studies which expand and redefine the boundaries of the discourse of Halakhah Thought. This book gives a new understanding of the Halakhic process through the analytical tools of the philosophy of Halakhah. It invites fresh insights into the Halakhah's dynamic in light of models which come from varied disciplinary fields. In this framework, we will meet some models from philosophy, anthropology, sociology, law, psychology, and education which will shed a new light on our understanding of the concept of Meta-Halakhah. In this book, there are discussions such as "what is the contribution of feminism to the halakhic discourse?" To quote Prof. Leibowitz (z”l), one of the first initiators of Korot, the purpose of the publication is: ...preference for topics based on sources not readily accessible to our colleagues abroad in their researches. Avoiding, as far as possible, a narrow parochial approach, we hope to enlarge the knowledge of medical historical facts and concepts in a field often regarded as somewhat esoteric.1 It is our hope that the present volume of Korot has succeeded in this endeavor. Our special thanks are due to Dr. Kenneth Collins for his kind assistance in the proofreading stage. Our next issue will emphasize the subject of Jews and medicine in the Renaissance period, e.g., Tuviah Cohen and Yosef Shlomo Delmedigo. Our readers are warmly invited to submit articles connected with these subjects, but also any other historical essays related to Jewish aspects of the history of medicine and science, for publication. Abstract: The book deals with the story of Dinah, told in Genesis 34, and with the wide range of relationships it forms with other biblical stories. This is important, since the story of Dinah was not sealed in the last verse of Genesis 34. Other stories, both in Genesis and other biblical books, shed light on our story, clarifying and enhancing its meanings from their own viewpoints. Moreover, the story of Dinah was not born ex nihilo. In telling his story, the narrator of Genesis 34 was guided by other biblical narratives, whose voices he kept hidden in between the lines. The present book seeks to locate the texts whose traces are found in the story of Dinah, as well as those which, conversely, bear its traces. In this way, we add a further layer to the study of intra-biblical exegesis and the exploration of intertextuality. More precisely, this work is part of the scholarly endeavor to outline the literary chronology of the Bible's stories and the hidden links that connect them to each other; to determine how these linkages work and what motivated their creation; and to comprehend the world of beliefs and opinions that is mirrored in them

Abstract: The commentary on Chronicles attributed to Rashi is an important commentary and milestone in Jewish exegesis that had never been the subject of thorough and systematic research. In fact, it has been one of the most neglected medieval commentaries. The objective of the book is to fill in this lacuna by examining all aspects of the commentary: the author's sources and teachers, the nature of the commentary and its exegetical method, the author's time and place and how he was influenced by his milieu, his linguistic glosses and literary ideas, his worldview, where the commentary fits into the peshat exegesis of the Middle Ages, and its influence on later commentaries on Chronicles. The commentary composed in Germany, ca. 1155. Its anonymous author was strongly influenced by the Jewish exegetes of northern France, especially Rashi and R. Joseph Qara; but there are clear affinities and links to commentaries from other locales as well. The systematic description of the commentary has cast light on other commentaries, too—familiar and unfamiliar—and retrieved allusive details about a forgotten circle of sages whose initial portrait can now be drawn

Abstract: This selection of studies spans a period of about 50 years while including new studies which are published here for the first time. The studies in the first section all deal with religious rituals in Israel in Biblical times, and are characterized by a constant aspiration to infiltrate this exotic and mysterious world, described in utopist and anachronistic lines, and to see it for what it is, without disregarding its legislative uncompromising character on the one hand or its internal power and riveting wholeness on the other. The second section brings together studies dealing with the written work and the author's labor in Biblical times and from which arises the fact that it is impossible to properly understand the biblical literary design without paying attention to the conditions in which the biblical author lived and the material he worked with, mainly the scrolls. Various studies dealing with various aspects of biblical literature and Israel's biblical faith and religion, were collected in the third section. The fourth section holds programmatic contents on critical studying of the bible and exploring it in the new era

Abstract: The publication of Korot 2007-2008 has to our regret been seriously delayed. There has, however, already been considerable interest toward the next issues, and thus we trust that Volume 20 will appear within the annual timetable. The main part of this issue of Korot consists of research reports from a workshop on the subject “History as Argument in Biomedicine: Representations of National Socialist 'Euthanasia' Between Politics and Historiography, ca. 1945-2000.” This workshop was part of a research project in the context of the Coordinated Research Program “Cultures of Memory” (Sonderforschungsbereich “Erinnerungskulturen”) located at the University of Giessen, Germany. The meeting took place in Beit Hagath in Ein Karem, Jerusalem, on January 29th, 2007. Other themes presented in this volume include questions on the experimental method and on reproductive choices as seen in Talmudic literature, on medieval Jewish physicians in the Arabic cultural area, on Karaite physicians, and on the relationship between modern medicine and the Kabbala, ending with the early stages of the medical profession in Eretz Israel. They thus cover nearly 2,000 years of Jewish medical history. The volume is, as usual, bilingual (English and Hebrew), with contributions from Germany, France and Finland, in addition to Israel. Korot is unique as the only journal devoted to Jewish aspects of the history of medicine and science. To quote Prof. Letters to the editor and brief historical notes are also welcome. Helena Paavilainen Guest editor

Abstract: The book GOD IN TIMES OF DESTRUCTION AND EXILES: Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) Theology presents the discourse about God in one of the most severe eras for the people of Judah. The author poses the question: 'What was said about God?' by prophets, kings, historiographers, poet, and the 'people' during the first half of the sixth century BCE, in reaction to the dramatic events which lead to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Babylonian exiles. Using the methodological tools of Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) Theology Dr. Rom-Shiloni reconstructs a multifaceted religious world of thought presented both overtly and covertly by variety of voices engaged in great controversies and polemics. The book draws a full range of perceptions, from justifying God in His deeds, to skepticism, protest, and even to denial of His involvement in the historical events. Like in later periods of crisis in Jewish History, the discourse about God focuses on three major issues: God's role in the destruction and exiles, divine justice, and the present and future relationship between God and His people in face of the national catastrophe. The book calls attention to the Judeans' world of thought, in which all the participant voices were seeking ways to console reality of suffering with their traditional beliefs about God as Lord of Justice, good and benevolent, as well as the Omnipotent and Omniscient Lord of history

Abstract: Order In the Bible: The Arrangement of the Torah in Rabbinic and Medieval Jewish Commentary examines ideas about biblical order in the commentaries of Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and Nahmanides against the background of the Midrashic tradition. On the face of it, the arrangement of portions in the Torah is chronological, but close examination reveals more than a few discrepancies. The Midrash sometimes responded by saying that "There is no 'earlier' and 'later' in the Torah" (en muqdam ume'uhar ba-Torah)-- the order of the Torah is not always chronological. This response left the reader facing unexplained juxtapositions of chapters and verses. In some of the cases, the sages asked, lama nismekha, “Why were these two portions juxtaposed?” Usually, they sought to connect the unconnected stories and verses in the midrashic fashion, by adding to the events of the stories or by taking the second unit as the outcome of the first and deriving therefrom some moral teaching. Occasionally though, we find an attempt to answer the question of juxtaposition in terms that might be considered closer to the peshat method of explication. Moving in the direction of the peshat, medieval Jewish exegetes tried to explain biblical arrangement of both narratives and law based on thematic, associative, or literary links. Their attempts resulted in new ideas about the ordering of the Torah. This book contains hundreds of references to juxtaposition and non-chronological arrangements cited in the writings of the above commentators. These examples are put into the framework of each commentator's general approach to interpretation and his particular sense of biblical order. Dr. Isaac Gottlieb is a Senior lecturer in the Department of Bible at Bar-Ilan University and a member of its Institute for Jewish Bible Interpretation

Abstract: This book examines the place of the Temple and its rituals in early Rabbinic (Tannaitic) discourse, through a specific case study: the reconstruction of the ritual of the suspected adulteress (Num 5:11-32) in Mishna Sotah. Numbers chapter five describes a ritual performed to test suspicions raised by a husband regarding his wife's sexual fidelity. The jealous husband is required to bring his wife to the priest in the Temple, where she is subjected to an ordeal of a character unparalleled in Biblical law. The Mishnaic ritual differs significantly from the Biblical one, both in detail and overall character. The private priestly ritual becomes, in the Mishna, a grand public event (in which the Mishna invites “whoever wants to stare at her” to come and stare) directed by the Rabbis themselves. A new demand for objective evidence, to comply with standard Talmudic rules of evidence, is introduced. A number of procedures have been added at the beginning and during the course of the ritual. Even the conclusion of the ritual, the actual result of the test, has been radically altered. Why were these measures added to the Sotah ritual? Where were they taken from? How do they function in the context of Mishna Sotah as a whole? How do they relate to the Biblical ritual, on the one hand, and to the reality of the temple on the other? And, finally, what led the Rabbis to reinvent a ritual already described at length in the Bible? Through specific textual engagement with these questions the book suggests a new look at the Tannaitic discourse and the place of the temple in it

Abstract: This volume, now laid in front of the reader, completes a project started by the late professor Moshe Geshen-Gotstein over fifty years ago: The publishing of a scientific edition of the translation of the Bible into Palestinian-Syriac, based upon a renewed reading of its relics. Professor Goshen wished to produce an edition which will be able to serve both the scholars researching the Greek tradition - the translation to Palestinian-Syriac was made according to the Septuaginta - as well as the scholars of the various Assyrian dialects. The first part of the edition was initially published in 1973. The material for the second part was processed many years ago by Professor Goshen and his assistant, the late Hanan Shiron, yet owing to different circumstances was never published. The developments which occurred on the subject since then, have made it necessary to alter the original writings of Professor Goshen. After consulting with Professor Moshe Bar-Asher it was decided to publish the volume at its present form

Abstract: Modern Gnosis and Zionism reveals the compound connection between Life Philosophy (Lebensphilosophie) - a post- Nietzschean common approach that proliferated in the German culture of the turn of the nineteenth century - and Zionist thought. The book closely discusses Life Philosophy, its cultural and philosophical background, yet focuses mainly on Life-Philosophy as a modern version of Gnostic theology. It further demonstrates how Life Philosophy as modern Gnosis provided emerging Zionist thought with the metaphysical basis for the Zionist political argument. Zionist ideology, revealed through the analysis of a wide range of Zionist thinkers from the early twentieth century, is consequently argued to be a political-theological strategy, a type of argumentation in which political concepts are founded in (modern Gnostic) theology. Within this framework Modern Gnosis and Zionism, takes issue with a wide range of topics, such as the history of modernity and secularization, the theory of psychology, modern research on Gnostic theology, concepts of time, aesthetics and gender, as well as Zionist interpretation of history and of Jewish identity, its dialogue with Anti-Semitism and an inner-Zionist messianic impulse. As such this innovative book echoes the new rise of scholarly interest in the relations between politics and theology, the 'secular' and the 'religious

Abstract: "Criticism of Modern Secular Culture" discusses the ethical, social, national-political humanistic and religious foundations of modern and post-modern secular culture, especially amongst the Jewish People and in the State of Israel. The topics discussed are from a philosophical-historical perspective that relates directly to the present. The book defines the basic values of Western Humanism from a Jewish point of view, and analyses the problems of their implementation. It evaluates the achievements and the tragic failures of secular modernism which became factually anti-humanistic

Abstract: Jubilees is a pseudepigraphical composition from the second century BCE, which was preserved among the Dead Sea Scrolls. The book rewrites the Pentateuch until the Sinaitic revelation, by means of additions, omissions and other changes. Scholars tend to the view it as a unified work, composed by one author. In light of numerous contradictions, both in narrative details and in issues of biblical interpretation, Michael Segal suggests a new approach towards understanding the literary development of the work: a redactor relied upon extant sources, generally rewritten biblical narratives, and incorporated them into a new literary framework. The redactor's unique contribution can be identified in the chronological framework and the legal passages. The internal contradictions between the different literary genres are the result of the literary development of the book. This source-critical analysis reveals a unified, complete worldview in the redactional layer of the book, which can be summarized by one fundamental principle: God established the entire world order at the time of creation. This is exemplified through the analysis of the question of the origin of evil in the world, perhaps the most pressing theological issue for any monotheistic religion. Throughout the book, one finds different approaches to this critical question, but when the redactional layer is examined by itself, a clear view emerges - God created both good and evil at the dawn of time as part of a cosmic, dualistic system. This book is intended for all those interested in Bible, Jewish literature of the Second Temple period, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, and Early Biblical Exegesis

Abstract: How should we explore the spiritual and ideological world of the Sages? Rabbinic thought is conveyed in the various works of Rabbinic literature, and this book offers something like a golden key to deciphering their meaning through literary study of the art of redaction. This is achieved by a systematic exploration of examples from the various genres of Rabbinic works: Mishnah, Tosefta, Midrash and Talmud

Abstract: מגדיל (כ')' ישועות מלכו ועשה-חסד למשיחו' (2 sam. 22:51)מִגְדּוֹל (ק') The Kethib and Qeri forms, scattered here and there, throughout the Biblical Text, combine here, like a mosaic, to form a complete picture and give one a comprehensive system of language. The book The Kethib and Qeri analyzes this linguistic system acording to the manuscript 'Kether Aram Tsova' presenting the method of the most authoritative Masorite scholar, Rabbi Aharon Ben-Asher. This sistematic study examines the Biblical phenomenon of Kethib and Qeri interchanges by linguistic criteria. The book consists of an introduction summarizing the research on this topic, and the following four chapters. Chapter One: Orthography deals with different orthographic realizations of words as הנער (K ) / הַנַּעֲרָה Q))Deut.22:15) ). Chapter Two: Morphology engages in morphological interchanges, as ואתי (K ) / וְאַתְּ (Q ) (Jud.17:2). Chapter Three: Syntax including various categories related to the syntax in particular the morpho-syntax like syntactic concord, as מגדיל (ישועות) (K ) / מִגְדּוֹל (ישועות) (Q)( Sam.22:512). And Chapter Four: Lexicon and Style deals with interchanges of K/Q in the domain of lexicon and style as העיר(התיכונה)(K ) / חָצֵר(התיכונה)(Q)(Kings. 20:42 ). Finally, a general summary of discussions and conclusions. Additionally, statistical data that indicate the validity of the findings with respect to occurrences of Kethib and Qeri in the Biblic Text in general. The Kethib and Qeri System in the Biblical Text is an innovative linguistic analysis, that will be of great interest to scholars of Biblical Language,Bible Exegesis and Masoretic Text

Abstract: Is it possible that Jews will expel their wives, the mothers of their children? The Jews returning from the Babylonian Diaspora were asked, according to the Book of Ezrah and Nehemia, to differentiate themselves from other people by expelling their foreign wives, thus purifying the community. This was a particularly harsh demand, quite unique in the biblical context. Yonina Dor examines this story through critical analysis of the biblical text, a historical discussion of these women's identity, and an anthropological examination of the events

Abstract: In 1961 William L. Moran published The Hebrew Language in Its Northwest Semitic Background (The Bible and the Ancient Near East: Essays in Honor of William Foxwell Albright), in which he presented a state-of-the-art description of the linguistic milieu out of which Biblical Hebrew developed. Moran stressed the features found in earlier Northwest Semitic languages that are similar to Hebrew and he demonstrated how the study of those languages sheds light on Biblical Hebrew. Since Moran wrote, our knowledge of both the Hebrew of the biblical period and of Northwest Semitic has increased considerably. In the light of new epigraphic finds and the significant advances in the fields of Biblical Hebrew and Northwest Semitic in the past four decades, the Institute for Advanced Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem convened an international research group during the 2001-2002 academic year on the topic "Biblical Hebrew in Its Northwest Semitic Setting: Typological and Historical Perspectives." The volume presents the fruits of the year-long collaboration and contains twenty articles based on lectures given during the year by members of the group and invited guests: Moshe Bar-Asher, Joshua Blau, John A. Emerton, Steven E. Fassberg, W. Randall Garr, Edward L. Greenstein, John Huehnergard, Avi Hurvitz, Jan Joosten, Menaem Z. Kaddari, Geoffrey Khan, André Lemaire, Mordechai Mishor, Adina Moshavi, Alviero Niccacci, M. O'Connor, Frank H. Polak, Elisha Qimron, Gary Rendsburg, and Ada Yardeni. The wide array of subjects discussed has important implications for the study of Biblical Hebrew and Northwest Semitic

Abstract: This book presents a descriptive and historical poetics of the re-written bible, or the exegetical narrative in rabbinic literature of Late Antiquity. The exegetical narrative is composed of a story which simultaneously represents and interprets its biblical counterpart. As a hermeneutical reading of the biblical story presented in narrative form, its defining characteristic lies precisely in this synergy of narrative and exegesis. This genre is but one historical manifestation of the general cultural phenomenon of re-writing canonical texts which begins already in the Bible itself and could be said to reach the modern era in works by Thomas Mann, Joseph Heller, and even “Moses the Prince of Egypt.” Paradoxically, it is precisely the canonical status of the text - that which acts as the foundation for its cultural legitimacy - that invites its constant transformation, violation, and appropriation by succeeding generations of readers. Within this general perspective, this book concentrates on one specific historical moment - rabbinic culture in Late Antiquity. Why, in what circumstances, and through which means does rabbinic culture transfigure itself by re-imagining its past? How does this genre exert its hegemony over the sacred text, its power and meanings? What are the cultural paradigms of coherence that both enable and restrain its reception? These are some of the questions the book addresses in an attempt to provide a new perspective on the cultural imagination of the rabbinic period

Abstract: This book seeks to re-examine the question of whether, indeed, Rav Kook's halakhic teachings lack originality and innovation; whether the two worlds of Rav Kook - the philosophical and the halakhic - are truly contradictory; whether those who maintain this position are correct in neglecting Rav Kook's halakhic heritage. The discussion here focuses on the nature of the philosophical and ideological considerations that find expression in his halakhic teachings. The type of considerations to be examined is called "meta-halakhic" or "extra-halakhic"; this term is defined in relation to the accepted conceptual framework and boundaries of halakha. Abstract: The base text of the edition reproduces the Aleppo Codex, the most important representative of the Tiberian masoretic text of the Ben Asher tradition. Underneath the text, four apparata of variant readings culled from various textual witnesses are presented: (I) the ancient Versions - the Greek Septuagint, the Latin Vulgate, the Aramaic Targum Jonathan, and the Syriac Peshitta; (II) the extant fragments of scrolls from the Judaean Desert and biblical quotations found in rabbinic literature; (III) select Genizah fragments and 'extra-masoretic' Hebrew medieval manuscripts; (IV) various Hebrew manuscripts representing the development of the masoretic text up to Ben Hayyim's Biblica Rabbinica of 1514-5.Associate Editor-Galen Marquis. Abstract: Prophet Ezekiel is not mentioned outside the book of Ezekiel even once. The book was almost shelved in a repository by ancients, but eventually was saved by Hananiah ben Hezekiah ben Garon (beginning of the first century AD). But the prophet and his book were not absent in the memory of Israel, and since the end of the biblical literature period (the beginning of the Second Temple period), the Book of Ezekiel was very influential. Ezekiel's visions and prophecies of God in Babylon captivated the mystics, the vision of the dry bones accelerated the idea of resurrection, and the division of the country into tribes fed the dream of the return of all the Jewish people to Israel

Abstract: Prof. Adele Berlin presents a new interpretation of the Book of Esther. In Berlin's opinion the scroll was written to explain the purpose and customs of Purim. The scroll itself is from the Hellenistic period. In her introduction, Berlin proves that the Persian background of the scroll is similar or even identical to the descriptions of persia and its customs as they appear in Greek literature from the Hellenistic period. Even its linguistic form belongs to that period. Won the The Israeli Culture and Sports minister's prize for literary work (2002)

Abstract: This book is a new Edition, amended and expanded, of the essay JEWS AND CHRISTIANS INTERPRET THE BIBLE originally published in 1992. The book is a collection of articles dealing with biblical commentary through the ages which centers mainly on the reciprocal relationship between the Jewish and Christian biblical commentary. These relationships are exposed as a rich and complex system of influence and controversy, which is manifested both explicitly and implicitly. The essays of the Jewish commentators, including Rashi, Rashbam, and R. Yosef Bechor Shor, are studied in light of the cultural world and reality of life at their time and as a response to that era, and the Christian commentary is examined through its complex and multi faceted relationship with the Jewish tradition and the Jewish Biblical Commentary

Abstract: In this pioneering study of Jewish thought in the past two decades, Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, explores how Jews have sought ways back to tradition in an untraditional age.He addresses a crucial dilemma for Jews and Judaism today. The Holocaust and the birth of the state of Israel have combined to create strong contemporary awareness of peoplehood - of Jews as sharing a common history, destiny and responsibility. But can there be peoplehood across the deep religious and cultural divisions that are the heritage of the Jewish encounter with modernity? He explores the responses of contemporary Jewish thought to this dilemma, through an examination of its understanding of the concepts of covenant and peoplehood; of the nature of religious pluralism within a Jewish context; of the relationship of Jewish law to contemporary society; and of the interpretation of religious texts today - the question of Fundamentalism. Rabbi Sacks assesses the thought of Joseph Soloveitchik, Yeshayahu Leibowitz, Eliezer Berkovitz, Michael Wyschogrod, Irving Greenberg and David Hartman. He reveals the acute inner tensions when a religious tradition collides with modern consciousness.Crisis and Covenant is essential reading not only for those scholars and students of Jewish thought and modern Jewish history, but for all those concerned with the fate of religious traditions in a secular age

Abstract: In this exciting book, Professor Moshe Halbertal of the Hebrew University and the Shalom Hartman Institute uncovers with brilliant conceptual clarity the religious world of the philosophically inclined rabbinic scholars of southern France. With impressive erudition, Halbertal surveys most of the relevant thirteenth- and fourteenth-century primary source material, both in print and in manuscript, with an emphasis on the writing and thought of Menah· em ha-Meiri of Perpignan (d.1315). Meiri was the leading talmudist of a proud and self-consciously independent southern French Jewish community at the turn of the thirteenth century and the author of an encyclopedic commentary on the Talmud, Bet ha-Beh· irah. The underlying question of the book is whether in Rashi's interpretive work there is a distinction between peshat and derash, as two distinct interpretive categories. The discussion is based on a careful examination of Rashi's interpretative terms and on the study of a large selection of his commentaries on the Bible

Abstract: This expanded translation of the Hebrew original is a penetrating study of early Hebrew prophecy as portrayed in the Old Testament. Professor Uffenheimer discusses the historical, theological and social aspects of this unique phenomenon, from its beginning to the emergence of classical prophecy in the 8th century BCE - a period stretching from the prophetic leadership of Moses and the charismatic savior-judges, through the court prophets of the United Monarchy, to the militant prophets of the Northern Kingdom, culminating in the internal crisis under Jehu that led to the evolution of classical prophecy. The author draws, on the one hand, upon extra-biblical, Near Eastern material (the Mari documents, Hittie vassal treaties, etc.); on the other, he relies upon inner literary analysis of the biblical sources themselves. Among other things, he contests some of the innovative theories that have been proposed to account biblical prophecy

Abstract: This book presents prophecy as the existential identity of the Jewish people. The three components of prophecy cannot be separated: the biblical dialog between god and man; the dialog of time that bestowed history to the Jewish people, a history that transcends existence (as part of the covenant); the social dialog that holds at its core the meaning of Torah. Prophecy is also exposed as a human experience and encompasses enslavement, obstacles and mediation among other things.Andre Neher sharpens the character and contribution of the great prophets: from Abraham and Moses to Amos, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, and Ezekiel

Abstract: The nuclear family in the Ancient Near East and in Israel generally included a father, a mother and children. The whole family was subject to the authority of the father. The father had extensive legal capacities - despite certain restrictions - that had a decisive impact on the fate and economic situation of the whole family. This book investigates the nature of the legal relationship between parents and children and the nature of the patriarchal regime in the Bible and the Ancient Near East. The main questions discussed in the book are: What gives a child legal status? What was the infrastructure and the nature of the legal relationship between parents and children? Did parents have to provide for their children? What was the legal authority of parents to punish their children in respect of unlawful conduct towards them? The book makes an important contribution to understanding the basic issues of character and personality of society in ancient times

At this time, the empires ruling Syria and Canaan during the late Bronze Period (1500-1300 BCE) collapsed, allowing for new nations and tribes to infiltrate the region. Some engaged in battles over territory with the Israelites, who settled on Canaan's central mountain and in its surrounding deserts. The Israelites sought a stable regime. While many argued that this could be achieved by crowning a king, others objected to such a drastic change. This study sheds light on these changes by depicting the different forces which operated in the Land of Israel and eventually paved the way to kingship, based on the story told in 1 Samuel chapters 1-12 and on a comparison with Ancient Near Eastern and Ancient Greek literature
