Abstract:
The Evian Conference was held in July 1938 in order to examine ways and means of helping Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria. The mainstream media gave detailed coverage to the conference, thus providing public opinion with information needed to form a judgment on it. Examines media (newspapers, radio) reports in Britain, France, Switzerland, and some other countries. Although some publications evinced antisemitic overtones, the media coverage shows that public opinion deplored the politics of the Third Reich, expressed compassion for the refugees, and stressed the humanitarian side of the refugee problem. Not all of the strata of public opinion were conscious of the failure of the conference.
